Port Claims Singles Title on Final Day of Elon Men’s Tennis Invitational

ELON, N.C. – Neal Port of the Elon University men’s tennis team claimed the Powell Singles title Sunday, Sept. 24, on the final day of the 2017 Elon Invitational at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center.

THE RUNDOWN
Port defeated East Carolina’s Will Bissett in straight sets, winning 6-3, 6-4. Throughout the weekend, the redshirt senior won a trio of three-set matches over opponents from UNCG, North Carolina A&T and College of Charleston before the straight-set win over Bissett Sunday to win the title.

Elsewhere, Salvador Mijares won the consolation side of the Maroon Singles draws, defeating Damon Roberts of James Madison by the score of 6-3, 6-4. Mijares lost his opening match to Marcus Vidgren of UNCG, but rattled off three wins in a row in the consolation draw to close the weekend.

In the Phoenix Singles title match, Louis Rico dropped a 6-4, 6-1 match to Drew Singerman of Furman. In doubles play, the Phoenix went 2-1 on the final day with Mario Paccini and Kyle Frankel winning their last match of the Gold Doubles draw and Rico paired with Taylor Foote to take their final match of the Phoenix Doubles draw.

UP NEXT
With two fall tournaments remaining on the schedule, Elon will head to Cary, N.C., next month from Oct. 13-16 for the ITA Carolina Regionals. A season ago, Port and Mijares made a run to the doubles quarterfinals. Along the way, they beat third-seeded and 33rd-ranked Jack Murray and Ronnie Schneider of North Carolina.
