Kasper, King Leads Elon Cross Country at VertCross Invite

KERNERSVILLE, N.C. – Members of the Elon University cross country programs competed at the VertCross Invite hosted by High Point on Friday evening, Oct. 13, at the Ivey P. Redmon Sports Complex.

The Elon men finished 11th overall at the meet with 283 points and edged out current and former league foes Wofford and UNCW among the 17 teams in the 8K race. Furman won the meet with 56 total points, edging out ETSU, who had 70 as the runner-up.

Sophomore Richie Kasper was the top runner to cross the line for Elon with his time of 26:29.3 and was 47th overall. Redshirt sophomore Colton Lawson was the next Phoenix runner across the finish line with a time of 26:34.14. Fellow redshirt sophomore Michael Germinario was the next runner for Elon at his time of 26:48.44 followed by Justin Leopold at 27:33.81. Greg Paugh rounded out the scored for the maroon and gold men with his time of 27:54.31.

In the women’s 6K, Sami King led the Phoenix female harriers with her time of 23:46.05 and was 47th in the race. Freshman Lauren Lynch was next up for Elon at her time of 24:30.19 while Emily Smith followed with a time of 24:52.38 in her season debut. Abby Reimer closed out the times for the Phoenix with a 25:15.52.

Host High Point won the meet with 62 points and the slight advantage over Appalachian State who was second with 68 points. ETSU was third with 73 points while Furman was fourth with 83 points. Elon did not have enough members finish the race to qualify as a team and went unscored at the meet.

The other members of the cross country teams will compete tomorrow, Oct. 14, at the NCAA Pre-Nationals in Louisville, Ky.
