RICHMOND, Va. – After running its winning streak to seven games, the Elon University football team saw two of its players earn weekly conference honors as quarterback Davis Cheek was named the CAA Football Offensive Player of the Week and wide receiver Kortez Weeks picked up CAA Football Rookie of the Week distinction.
The pair helped No. 10 Elon to a 19-14 victory over No. 13 Villanova on Saturday as the Phoenix put together its fourth, fourth-quarter rally of the season.
Cheek, who hails from Matthews, N.C., completed 24-of-35 passes for a career-high 357 yards and two touchdowns. The freshman engineered the comeback by throwing a 21-yard touchdown pass with 10:51 to go. The Phoenix generated 474 yards of offense against a Villanova defense that ranked in the top 10 nationally in total and scoring defense.
On the year, Cheek has completed 117 of his 183 passes for 1,550 yards and 12 touchdowns. The Jerry Rice Award Watch List member is averaging 193.8 yards per game through the air and has posted back-to-back 300-yard passing performances.
Weeks, a Mt. Ulla, N.C., native, became just the third player in program history to post a 200-yard receiving game as he set career highs with 11 receptions and 205 receiving yards. The 205 receiving yards were the seventh-most in school history as he joined Terrell Hudgins and Aaron Mellette in the 200-yard club.
Weeks currently leads the Phoenix with 40 receptions and 499 receiving yards. He has scored two touchdowns and is averaging 12.5 yards per catch.
The pair will look to lead the maroon and gold to an eighth consecutive victory this weekend as Elon hosts Towson at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 4.
