1A Men’s Cross Country Championship: Bishop McGuinness cruises to team title, Pine Lake Prep’s Phillips runs away with individual honors
KERNERSVILLE, NC – Bishop McGuinness took down the school’s fourth State Championship in the 1A Men’s Cross Country State Championship meet. The Villians outpaced second place Lincoln Charter by an average of just under 14 seconds for the day. Bishop runners had three top-ten finishes of the team times and added an 11th and 13th place mark for good measure to score 51 points to Lincoln Charter’s 95. The Villians top individual finisher was Garrett Price who finished 14th overall in a time of 17:24.91. His teammates Sean Muller, Xavier Peudhomme and Adam Pitman logged 16th, 17th and 18th place finishes overall respectively.
Conrad Phillips from Pine Lake Prep cruised to the individual championship with a time of 16:09.70. He was more than 27 seconds faster than Lucas Brown from Queens Grant who posted a time of 16:36.89. Phillips averaged 5:12.2 per mile. Phillips is the first Pine Lake Prep men’s runner to win the individual State Championship in cross country.
2A Men’s Cross Country Championship: North Lincoln captures school’s third championship, Franklin’s Richards holds off West Wilkes’ Miller for individual
KERNERSVILLE, NC – In one of the tightest races of the day, the individual crown went to Franklin’s senior leader, Nathan Richards who crossed the line in 16:05.70, just five seconds ahead of Brandon Miller from West Wilkes. The top five runners were all within 15 seconds of each other. Richards championship was the third for a runner from Franklin since 1986 on the men’s side of the championship.
North Lincoln captured the school’s third state championship as a team in Men’s Cross Country. North was led by junior Brian Risse, who cleared the course in 16:12.07, finishing third in the individual meet. North Lincoln held off First Flight by a 58-69 count, they averaged a time of 16:43.27 to First Flight’s 16:45.53. Jason Thomson finished 11th overall for North Lincoln, crossing in 16:36.90. Johnny Grant crossed about 9 seconds later for North Lincoln, at 16:45.10 in 14th place overall.
3A Men’s Cross Country Championship: Mount Tabor claims school’s fourth team championship behind Ponder’s individual crown
KERNERSVILLE, NC – Mount Tabor’s drop to 3A in the new realignment suited the cross country team quite well as they swept the 2017 3A Men’s Cross Country Championships. Cameron Ponder led the way for Mount Tabor with a course meet-record time of 15:19.77. Ponder became the school’s fourth individual State Champion in Cross Country on the Men’s side, outpacing Northern Guilford’s David Melville by just over seven seconds.
Mount Tabor also got a top-ten individual finish from Charles Pace, who finished 9th overall, posting a time of 16:05.50. Teammate Michael Moerk clocked in at 16:24.71, which was enough for 15th place overall. Mount Tabor took down Weddington by a count of 72-110 with defending 3A Champions Chapel Hill placing a close third at 114 points total. Mount Tabor runners averaged 16:12.83 to Weddington’s 16:29.22 average finish.
4A Men’s Cross Country Championship: Tatter takes R.J. Reynolds’ second individual title ever, Green Hope runs away with second team title for school
KERNERSVILLE, NC – Senior runner John Tatter crushed the field in the 4A Men’s Cross Country State Championship meet. Tatter finished in 15:20.11, just under 8 seconds off of the all-time 4A Course record, on his way to winning the second individual Cross Country Championship in R.J. Reynolds school history. Tatter bested second place Finn McBride from Green Hope by over 26 seconds, as McBride finished in 15:46.39.
Green Hope ran away with the team championship as the Falcons placed five runners in the top-20 of the individual meet. The senior McBride led the way, with fellow seniors Peyton Barish and Ryan Kemper not too far behind. Barish finished in 16:58.95 for sixth spot while Kemper crossed in 16:00.16 for seventh place.
