Men’s Soccer Falls In USA South Semifinals

ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. – The No.2 East seeded Greensboro College men’s soccer team fell to the No. 1 West seed Maryville College in the USA South Athletic Conference Tournament semifinals Friday, 1-0.

After playing to a scoreless draw for 60 minutes, the Scots found the back of the net to gain a one-goal lead.

Greensboro then began to push numbers forward and was able to get a shot off, but Darly Mihndou placed the ball off the crossbar and Maryville was able to neutralize the Pride threat.

Following the crossbar hit, the Pride was unable to get another good look on goal despite a strong effort, falling by the one-goal margin.

“It’s always bitter sweet to end the season this way,” Head Coach Tony Falvino said. “I want to thank all the seniors for their service to Greensboro College and the men’s soccer program. They can all hold their heads up High.

“It was a tough match and it took us a little while to get into a rhythm. Once we did, I thought we created some very good chances. Unfortunately, we could not capitalize on them. We did a good job defensively outside of one lapse of concentration that we were punished for. I thought the boys responded well from the set back and we went on to create several very good chances but did not finish them.”

The Pride outshot the Scots on the afternoon 11-6, while also holding a 3-2 advantage in corner kicks. Jaime Payamps took the loss in goal despite recording two saves.

With the loss, the Pride men finish the 2017 season with a 15-5-1 overall record. For more information on Greensboro College men’s soccer, continue to follow www.greensborocollegesports.com.
