Lewis’ Career-High Helps Lead Pride Women Past Wesley

ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. – Katie Lewis(Southeast Guilford High School) scored a career-high 22 points as the Greensboro College women’s basketball team capped off a stellar first week of the 2017-2018 season Sunday by defeating the Wolves of Wesley College, 70-54.

The game was the Pride’s final contest of the Jean Edge Classic, hosted by North Carolina Wesleyan College.

Wesley (0-2) raced to an eight-point lead over the first six minutes of the first period before Greensboro (3-0) closed out the period on a 9-0 run to take a 15-14 lead. Kamerin Williams, who finished with a game-high 16 rebounds, started the run for Greensboro with her first field goal of the afternoon. Following Williams’ layup, Laprecious England and Katie Lewis capped off the run with a pair of three-pointers.

After the Wolves were able to briefly regain a one-point lead, Greensboro went on to take their largest lead of the half at 27-20 with 4:43 showing on the clock, following a 12-4 run that lasted five minutes. During the run, Greensboro connected on five-of-eight chances from the field.

Lewis fueled the run with four points, while Shaniah Haynes, Rasheika Gregory, Jonacia Harper and Sabria Joseph combined for eight points.

Wesley was then able to battle back over the final four minutes of the half to take a 33-32 lead into halftime.

Neither team was able to get their offense going early in the third period, but Greensboro used a 15-5 run over the final 6:22 of the period to take a 49-40 lead into the final segment.

Over the final 10 minutes of action, Wesley was able to pull within five points with 5:52 on the clock but Lewis help shut the door with three three-pointers, while Lauren Jenkins added a three-point play to finish with a season-high 13 points.

“I am glad that we got the win today and finished the first week of our season at 3-0,” Head Coach Randy Tuggle said. “We still have a number of things that we need to clean up in order to become the team that I think we can be.

“I am really happy with the way that Katie (Lewis) and Kamerin (Williams) played this weekend. They deserved the All-Classic honors.”

Greensboro held a 47-41 advantage in the rebound category, while also turning 14 offensive rebounds into 17 points. Gregory joined Jenkins and Lewis in double figures with 11 points and England dished out a game-high five assists.

Following the conclusion of the classic, Williams and Lewis was named to the All-Classic team.
