ELON, N.C. – Shay Burnett recorded 10 points, 11 rebounds and 10 assists Monday night, Nov. 27, to earn the first triple-double in school history in Elon University women’s basketball’s 106-54 victory over Coker in Alumni Gym.

BOX SCORE

“I want to give a shoutout to my teammates, first and foremost, for wanting this as much as I did,” Burnett said of the accomplishment after the game. “I’ve been close a couple times, but they really finished tonight and helped me get over the hill. I’m just shocked and speechless, I’ve been trying to get it and it’s a hard thing to get so I thank my teammates and coaches for helping me reach a goal I’ve set and been trying to reach since Day 1.”

Bouncing back from its first loss of the season just 48 hours prior to Iowa, Elon now stands at 6-1 on the season. With the game technically an exhibition for the Cobras, Coker’s marks stands at 2-3 on the season.

THE RUNDOWN
Coker opened the night with seven quick points to lead 7-2 less than two minutes in. After keeping its five-point lead at 9-4, the Cobra lead was short lived with Elon going on a 22-0 run and ultimately closed the final 7:30 on a 24-2 run to take a 28-11 lead to the second. Malaya Johnson scored each of Elon’s first seven points of the night before a Burnett layup tied the game at 9-9.

Though Elon tried to keep pushing its lead further in the second quarter, Coker hung with the Phoenix by draining four three-pointers in the frame. After starting the game 1-for-5 from three-point range, it missed three more attempts to start the second quarter before knocking down four in a row over a span of 3:14 of game action. That held Elon to just a four-point margin at 27-23 for the quarter, but the Phoenix owned a 55-34 lead at the break.

Elon’s defense out of the locker room clamped down on the Cobras throughout the second half, only allowing two more three-pointer in the final 20 minutes while holding Coker to just 20 points overall. On the offensive end, Elon added 27 more points while picking up 24 more in the fourth to score at least 20 points in all four quarter for the second time this season.

-Monday’s game marked the third in four days for the Phoenix after competing in the Puerto Rico Clasico on Friday, Nov. 24, and Saturday, Nov. 25. It’s also the fourth game in six days for Elon after playing UCF in Orlando last Wednesday, Nov. 22. Elon is 3-1 during the stretch.
