WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The Greensboro College women’s basketball team held off the Spirits of Salem College Wednesday to pick up their fifth USA South Athletic Conference victory, 70-67.

Greensboro came out of the gates fast in the first six minutes of the first period as they established an 18-2 lead with just over four minutes showing on the clock. During the run, the Pride connected on 60 percent of their shots, including 3-of-4 from three-point range. Katie Lewis(Southeast Guilford HS) paced the run with six points, while Laprecious England and Kylee Barry had three points each.

Following the big run, Greensboro held a 14-point edge heading into the second period.

Salem then pulled to within ten points in the opening minute of the period, but Greensboro used a 11-2 run that lasted five minutes to take their largest lead of the contest at 31-12 with 4:20 remaining until halftime.

Over the next nine minutes of play, Greensboro was able to maintain their double-digit advantage until the Spirits capped off a 19-7 run to pull within seven points at 38-31 midway through the third period.

However, Greensboro was once again able regain a double-digit lead later in the period before Salem came storming back to pull within four points at 59-55 with 3:30 to play in the contest.

As the time began to tick away, the Pride was able to capitalize on 5-of-9 chances from the charity stripe to secure the three-point victory.

“This was a good road win for our team tonight,” Head Coach Randy Tuggle said. “We played pretty good defense for most of the night, but we still did not play a complete game for a full 40 minuets.”

Lewis(Southeast Guilford HS) finished with a team-high 22 points, while Kamerin Williams and Lauren Jenkins combined for 23 points. Jenkins also paced Greensboro with nine rebounds on the evening.

The Pride women will return to action at 2 p.m. Saturday when they travel to Mary Baldwin College to take on the Squirrels. For more information on Greensboro College women’s basketball, continue to follow www.greensborocollegesports.com.
