GREENSBORO, N.C. – Guilford College’s Lauren Ramsey (Lexington, N.C./North Davidson) scored 10 of her game-high 17 points in the second half of the Quakers’ 64-51 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) basketball win over Shenandoah University Saturday.
Guilford (10-3, 4-2 ODAC) outscored the Hornets, 23-11, in the fourth quarter to break open a one-point game. Miracle Walters (Elkin, N.C./Elkin) made all three fourth-quarter shots and tallied six of her 14 points in the last period. The Quakers made 10-of-16 (62.5%) fourth-quarter shots, compared to Shenandoah’s 4-for-13 (30.8%) shooting.
Guilford scored 10 of the fourth quarter’s first 12 points, but Hornets’ three-pointers by Sarah Donley and Kirstyn Arcata kept the guests within reach. However, Kendyl Medlin’s trifecta with 1:56 left in regulation capped a 7-0 Guilford spurt and opened an insurmountable 62-48 lead.
Led by career rebounding highs by rookies Jasmine McBride (10) and Julie Carini (9), Guilford enjoyed a 49-29 edge on the boards. The total includes 18 offensive rebounds, which helped the Quakers to 17 second-chance points, compared to none for the Hornets. Carini also matched her career high with 14 points and helped Guilford outscore Shenandoah in the paint, 52-7. Guilford forced 12 steals, including a career-high six by Walters, which led to 15 Hornets’ turnovers and 14 Quakers’ points.
Arcata’s 15 points led Shenandoah, which made nine three-pointers, but shot just 33.3 percent from the floor overall. Donley made four of six shots from beyond the arc on the way to 12 points and Ashley Stone chipped in with 10 points and team-high six rebounds.
