BUIES CREEK, N.C. — The High Point University men’s basketball team dropped a heartbreaker at Campbell, 65-64, on a last-second shot Friday night (Jan. 12) at Gore Arena.

With 16.9 seconds left up a point, 63-62, junior Andre Fox was fouled and made one of two free throws to give HPU (7-9, 2-3 Big South) a two point lead, but Chris Clemons of Campbell (9-8, 3-2) hit a 25-foot 3-point shot at the buzzer to give the Camels the win.

“I feel bad for the kids, they played their hearts out,” HPU head coach Scott Cherry said. “They played with right attitude and mindset, and came in with a toughness that I hadn’t seen, so I’m proud of the way our guys performed. Unfortunately, it came down to some execution at the end of the game with some turnovers, some missed free throws and then they buried a heck of a shot to win the game.”

For the game, the Panthers shot 46.2 percent (24-52) to Campbell’s 48.1 percent (25-52). HPU outrebounded the Camels, 35-25, but had 15 turnovers to Campbell’s 12.

Junior Andre Fox led HPU with 20 points, the ninth time this season he has recorded 20 or more points this season. Sophomore Jahaad Proctor added 11, while junior Ricky Madison had 10 on 5-6 shooting.

In the first half, Campbell’s Chris Clemons scored a three-point play to tie the game at 24 with 4:22 left, but the Panthers went on a 9-0 run to close out the half. Sophomore Brandonn Kamga and Fox layups were followed by a Proctor three and a Slay runner with a second to go gave High Point a 33-24 halftime lead.

After a Cory Gensler three gave Campbell a four-point lead at 42-38 with 11:10 remaining, the Panthers went on a 19-7 run that included six field goals in a row to take a 57-49 lead with 4:25 left. The Camels went on a 7-0 run to cut the lead to two at 62-60. Fox made a free throw, but Gensler hit a layup to cut the lead to one and set up the final sequence.

Clemsons scored 25 points to lead all scorers.

Up next, the Panthers return home to play Presbyterian on Monday night (Jan. 15). Tip-off at the Millis Center is set for 7 p.m.
