GREENSBORO, N.C. — Mitchell Stumpo and Ryan Hill of the Guilford College baseball team have agreed to play with teams in the Coastal Plain League (CPL) this summer.
The CPL is an amateur collegiate summer baseball league in the Southeastern United States. The rosters of CPL teams are typically compromised of NCAA Division I and II student-athletes.
Stumpo, a junior, will pitch for the Gastonia Grizzlies, the defending CPL champions who finished the season ranked 26th in the final Collegiate Summer Baseball Top 30 rankings. Stumpo made nine appearances for Guilford in 2017. He struck out 13 in 13.1 innings and picked up two wins and a save. Stumpo was named a Second-Team All-Old Dominion Athletic Conference selection as an outfielder as he hit .364 in 38 games.
Hill will pitch for the Asheboro Copperheads. Last summer, Hill played for the Randolph County (N.C.) Post 45 that made it to the American Legion World Series (AWLS). Hill picked up two wins in two AWLS starts. He struck out 11 and had a 3.15 ERA in 20 innings. Last year for Guilford, Hill appeared in seven games as a pitcher and 30 games as a hitter where he finished with a .225 batting average.
Stumpo and Hill will help coach Nick Black’s ‘02 Quakers as they open the season February 9 against Greensboro College at McBane Field.
