Liberty Elite Invitational Awaits Elon Track and Field on Saturday

ELON, N.C. – For the third straight weekend, the Elon University women’s track and field team treks to Liberty University to take part in the Liberty Elite Invitational on Saturday, Feb. 10, inside the Liberty Indoor Track Complex. The meet is scheduled to kickoff at 10 a.m.

Phoenix in Action on Saturday
The Phoenix is scheduled to have 25 of its athletes and its 4×400-meter relay team competing at the Liberty Elite Invitational. Eight schools have entered at least one athlete for this weekend’s meet including Charleston Southern, Charlotte, East Carolina, ETSU, High Point, North Carolina A&T and host Liberty.

Phoenix ECAC Qualifiers
With only two meets remaining on the indoor regular season schedule including this weekend, the Phoenix is trying to add more members to qualify for the 2018 Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Indoor Championships in Boston beginning on March 1. Heading into the meet, individually the Phoenix has qualified four athletes for the ECACs in Melissa Anastasakis (1,000-meters), Emily Dixon (pentathlon), Bryanna Hames (shot put) and Chelsea Smith (1,000-meters). The maroon and gold also has qualified its 4×800-meter and distance medley relay teams.

Last Time Out
Early this week, Dixon competed at the Queens Combined Events meet on Tuesday, Feb. 6, at the JDL Fast Track Complex, taking part in the pentathlon. The Bath, England, native scored 3,620 points in the five events and was able to qualify for the ECAC Indoor Championships. She would finish as the runner-up.

On Thursday, Feb. 8, members of the Phoenix returned to the JDL Fast Track Complex for the JDL Team Challenge. Elon had a dominating performance at the meet, picking up four event victories, including a sweep of the podium in the weight throw and several others setting new personal-records.

Sophomore Skylar Barthelmes took medalist honors in the weight throw as the Dartmouth, Mass., native shattered her previous personal-best with her heave of 53′ 4.25″ (16.26m). That mark is now the second-best throw in school history. Bryanna Hames was second in the event with her new personal-record throw of 50′ 10.25″ (15.50m) – the fifth-best mark in school history. Freshman Charlotte Bradsher was third with her new personal-best toss of 49′ 9.25″ (15.17m).

Nicole Karabas won the pole vault for the Phoenix as the Winnetka, Ill., native set her new personal-record after clearing the bar at 11′ 3.75″ (3.45m). Fellow junior Ellie Bennett was second behind Karabas with her mark of 10′ 10″ (3.30m).

Melody Burke earned the win in the high jump for the Phoenix, clearing the bar at 5′ 3″ (1.60m). Katie Arbogast rounded out the Phoenix victors on the day as she took first in the 400-meters with a time of 57.91. Lauren Brzozowski was seventh with a time of 1:00.78 while Meagan Henderson also finished in the top-10 with a time of 1:01.51.

Elon will compete in its last meet of the indoor regular season next weekend, Feb. 16-17, at the UCS Invite at the JDL Fast Track Complex.
