High Point WLAX Outpaces Furman, 17-6, in Season Opene

• The Panthers defeated Furman, 17-6, in their 2018 season opener
• Senior Erica Perrotta reached the 100-career goal milestone with four goals
• Sophomore Ashley Britton tied the school record for draw controls in a single game with seven

HIGH POINT, N.C. — The High Point University women’s lacrosse team opened up the 2018 season with a 17-6 win over Furman Saturday afternoon (Feb. 10) at Vert Stadium in High Point.

The Panthers (1-0) out-shot the Paladins (0-1), 43-13, and picked up 21 ground balls to Furman’s 11. High Point also won the battle of the draw, earning 19 draw controls to the Paladins’ six.

“We came out today with a lot of focused energy, working hard for each other, and I the girls represented High Point University really well in our home opener,” HPU head coach Lyndsey Boswell said. “We talked about controlling the pace of play and controlling the draw control, and we did a great job of that throughout the game.”

Senior Erica Perrotta reached the 100-career goal plateau on her second tally of the game. Perrotta finished a complete day at both ends with four goals, four ground balls, four draw controls and five caused turnovers.

Sophomore Ashley Britton recorded the second hat trick of her career with three goals, while also adding seven draw controls, which ties the school record for draw controls in a single game.

Senior Darla Poulin added a hat trick, while senior Brooke Stevens and junior Emory Gaeng each had two goals and an assist. Junior Meredith Chapman registered the first goal of her career along with two assists. She had one career assist coming into the contest.

After Britton scored 1:01 into the game, the Paladins tied the game just under three minutes into the contest, but HPU scored the next four goals to break open the game.

In goal, sophomore Jill Rall played the first half and made one save to earn the win, while freshman Sarah Zeto played the second half and recorded two saves.

The Panthers return to action Friday (Feb. 16) against No. 3 North Carolina. First draw at Vert Stadium is set for 4 p.m.
