ELON, N.C. – The Elon University baseball team erased a 6-0 deficit, but would fall to the visiting Marshall Thundering Herd by an 11-7 margin in 11 innings in the final game of a three-game set at Latham Park on Sunday, Feb. 25.
Josh Broughton, Matt Oldham and Peter Perkins combined to collect six of Elon’s eight hits on the day as each had a two-hit outing. Oldham and Ryne Ogren each had multi-RBI games for the Phoenix (2-6) with two and three, respectively.
After throwing 1.1 innings out of the bullpen, Sean Byrnes(0-1) took the loss. He was charged with two runs on two hits.
For Marshall (4-2), Reynaldo Pastrana recorded three hits, scored twice and drove in four runs.
Gordon Cardenas (2-0) earned the win by keeping Elon scoreless over the final 3.1 innings.
How It Happened: After falling behind 6-0, Elon began its rally in the last of the sixth inning when Ogren’s single to center drove home Oldham.
The Phoenix would then strike for six runs over its next two at bats. In the seventh, Peter Perkins delivered a pinch-hit single to lead off the frame. After a Broughton single and a strike out, Oldham was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Zach Evers followed by earning a walk to end an eight-pitch at bat to force home Perkins. Cam Devanney’s single pulled Elon within 6-3 before Ogren drew the second bases-loaded walk of the inning to make it a 6-4 contest.
Elon would score three more times in the eighth to take a 7-6 advantage. A fielder’s choice, single and hit batter loaded the bases with one out for Oldham who delivered a two-RBI single to right that knotted things up at six. With the bases loaded and two outs, Ogren again walked with the bags full to force home Jack Robertswith the go-ahead run.
As they did on Friday night, the Herd was able to tie the game in the ninth. Andrew Zban led off with a double and moved to third on an infield single before scoring on a Pastrana sacrifice fly.
It remained a 7-7 game until the 11th when Marshall pushed across four runs. Raul Cabrera and Pastrana recorded back-to-back singles to start the inning and advanced on a sacrifice bunt. Will Ray then drove both runs in with a double down the right field line. The Herd would tack on two more in the inning, the first on a Peter Hutzal single and the second on a Phoenix throwing error.
Notes: Ogren has reached safely in all seven games this season.
