HPU Women’s Golf Concludes Second Round at Kiawah Island

KIAWAH ISLAND, S.C. — The High Point University women’s golf team finished second-day action at the Edwin Watts/Kiawah Island Spring Classic in a tie for 28th place Monday (Feb. 26) at the Oak Point Golf Club (Par 72 – 5,941 yards) in Kiawah Island, S.C.

In the second round, the Panthers shot a 19-over 307 and have a two-day total of 611 to sit in a tie for 28th out of 43 schools. Host College of Charleston shot 9-under and leads the tournament with a two-day score of 567.

Freshman Anna-Marie Kuenzle led the Panthers with a 1-over 73 after earning three birdies against four bogeys. After two days, Kuenzle is tied for 123rd at 11-over.

Sophomore Tonrak Tasaso leads the team on the overall leaderboard in a tie for 55th at 4-over. Tasaso shot 5-over 77 in the second round. Freshman Anna Holmberg is tied for 144th at 13-over after a second round 78 (+6), while senior Cayla Smith and sophomore Samantha Vodry are tied for 152nd at 14-over.

“This week isn’t going as well as we’d hoped for but I think we definitely shook off a lot of the rust today,” HPU head coach Alexis Bennett said. “I’m really happy for Anna-Marie. She’s been close to rounds like this before and hasn’t quite been able to finish them off. She took a big step forward today so we’re looking forward to finishing strong tomorrow with a total team effort.”

The action continues Tuesday at 8:45 a.m. The Panthers will compete at Oak Point for a flight championship between the schools that are No. 23-43 in the standings.
