Guilford Track and Field Teams Opened Outdoor Year at 49er Classic

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — The Guilford College track and field teams opened the outdoor season at the 49er Classic this weekend. Hosted by UNC Charlotte at the Irwin Belk Track & Field Center, the event featured NCAA Division I, II and III and NAIA teams.

The Quaker women garnered a number of notable performances. On Friday, Summer Fanney broke the outdoor mile time after running a 5:03.87. Fanney, who bested Bethany Taylor’s 2011 time of 5:05.04, was 79th of 141 competitors in the race. Teammate Carmen Curtis clocked the fifth best 100M time (13.64) in GC history.

On Saturday, Fanney notched the eight best 800M outdoor time. Her mark of 2:31 put her 76th of 115 runners.

On the men’s side, triple jumpers Wanya Alford and Jeremiah Hedrick stole the headlines for GC on Saturday. Alford leaped 13.47 meters for the second-best Guilford mark. Hedrick was close behind with a 13.43 measurement, the third best among all-time Quakers. The Guilford duo was 19th and 20th respectively of the 35 competitors.

The Guilford track and field teams compete next at the Dr. Jack Toms Invitational, hosted by Lynchburg College. The two-day meet begins on Friday, March 23.
