HPU Women’s Golf Finishes Eighth at MSU Spring Citrus Challenge

SORRENTO, Fla. — The High Point University women’s golf team battled weather and finished eighth at the MSU Spring Citrus Challenge Tuesday (March 20) at the RedTail Golf Club in Sorrento, Fla.

Only two rounds were completed before bad weather canceled play in the middle of the third round. HPU finished with a 311 in the second round and placed eighth at 622 for 36 holes. Florida Gulf Coast won the tournament at 597.

“It was a really frustrating week for us overall,” HPU head coach Alexis Bennett said. “We had a really strong round going today before the wash out, so we are disappointed we weren’t able to get round three in, but beyond that we have a lot of work to do, especially in our ability to close rounds out. We’ve given up a lot of strokes this spring on the final five holes.”

Sophomore Tonrak Tasaso shot 3-over 75 in the second round and finished in a tie for second place at 148. Sophomore Samantha Vodry and freshman Anna Holmberg both shot the same score of 6-over 78 and placed in a tie for 28th at 157.

Freshman Caitie Gelhausen placed in a tie for 46th at 161, while senior Cayla Smith improved five shots over her first round score to finish at 165. Playing as an individual, freshman Vasy Montague placed 52nd at 163.

Up next, the Panthers compete at the Charleston Invitational April 2-3 at the RiverTowne Country Club in Pleasant, S.C.
