Maryland Snaps Elon Baseball’s Home Winning Streak

ELON, N.C. – The visiting Maryland Terrapins put an end to the Elon University baseball team’s six-game home winning streak as the Phoenix dropped an 11-3 contest at Latham Park on Wednesday, March 21.

Elon (11-10) got RBI singles from James Venuto (1-for-4) and Liam O’Regan (1-for-1) to account for two of its runs.

Ryan Conroy (0-2) took the loss after surrendering one run on two hits in an inning of work.

For Maryland (10-11), Marty Costes homered and drove in three with a 2-for-5 day, while Tommy Gardiner was 2-for-5 with two RBI.

In a declared staff day, Maryland starter Mike Vasturia (1-0) earned the win. He allowed one hit in 2.0 innings.

How It Happened: Maryland struck for one in the first to grab the early lead. Zach Jancarski led off the game with a double inside the third base bag and moved to third on a ground out before scoring on a Nick Dunn sacrifice fly.

The Terps extended the lead to 5-0 in the third thanks to a pair of two-run singles from AJ Lee and Costes.

With the score 7-0, Elon got its first run in the last of the fourth. Cam Devanney hit a one-out single to left before Garrett Stonehouse and Joe Satterfield walked to load the bases. Hayden Platt’s grounder then allowed Devanney to score.

Maryland would add two more in the fifth before the Phoenix got an RBI single to right from Venuto to drive in Matt Oldham to make it 9-2.

The Terps would add single runs in the sixth and ninth, while Elon got its final marker when O’Regan’s two-out single drove home Stonehouse from second.

Notes: Maryland has won three straight in the series… Devanney and Satterfield each ran their streak of reaching safely to 11 games, while Oldham’s hitting streak reached 10 games.

On Deck: Elon will open CAA play this weekend with a three-game series at James Madison. The set is scheduled to open with a 6:30 p.m. game in Harrisonburg, Va., on Friday.
