• Sophomore Brendan MacDougall closed out his top-20 finish with a 73 in the final round on Sunday.
• With an eagle apiece from sophomore Alec Weary and senior Emile Menard on the weekend, the Panthers have tied the program’s single-season eagle record with nine.
• High Point shot a 297, which was its best round of the event and the fifth- lowest in the field on Sunday

GREENVILLE, S.C. – The High Point University men’s golf team carded its lowest round of the weekend (297) in the final day of the Furman Intercollegiate on Sunday.

For the third straight day, sophomore Brendan MacDougall shot the best round of any Panther with a +1 (73). Overall, the Calgary, Alberta native finished tied for 16th on the leaderboard (73-71-73, +1).

As a team, HPU shot the fifth-best round in the field and moved up two spots on the day to earn a 17th-place finish in the event. In the process, the Panthers passed Charleston Southern and Presbyterian to finish third among the five Big South participants.

“We played solid team golf today and had the fifth-best round of the day,” head coach Brady Gregor said. “Unfortunately, we learned how hard it is to battle back after the position we put ourselves in after the first two rounds. This team knows it can compete with anyone. Now it’s a matter of having the confidence going out and doing it for three consecutive days.”

Firing his best round of the weekend, Davis Kiger shot a +2 (74) to move up into a tie for 70th (80-75-74, 229). The junior opened the day with a bogey before playing the final 17 holes just one-over.

Similarly, sophomore Alec Weary saved his best for last tying Kiger on the day and in the tournament as a whole (77-78-74, 229). Like Kiger, Weary bogeyed his first hole, but responded playing just one-over the remainder of the day.

Rounding out the lineup both freshman Ryan McCarthy and senior Emile Menard notched their best rounds of the tournament. McCarthy led the squad with a team-high five birdies en route to a 76 (79-78-76, 233). Meanwhile, Menard’s 78 allowed him to improve his score each round (83-79-78, 240).

Both Menard and Weary carded an eagle on the weekend as the Panthers tied the program record for most eagles in a season with nine so far in 2017-18.

North Florida earned the team victory (847) while UNF’s Phillip Knowles took home the medalist honor (207). MacDougall was the highest individual finisher among the Big South’s representatives.

The Purple & White continue their spring schedule on April 2-3 at the ECU Intercollegiate held at the Brook Valley Country Club.
