HPU Track and Field: Soper, Romero Claim Bill Webb Combined Event Titles

HIGH POINT/RALEIGH, N.C. — The High Point University track and field teams picked up titles in both events of the Bill Webb Combined Events Friday (March 30) at Vert Stadium. The Panthers also had a select group of student-athletes compete at the Raleigh Relays in Raleigh.

In High Point, senior CeAnna Soper broke the school record and won the women’s heptathlon with a score of 4,613 points. Soper won the javelin with a PR of 41.78m (137-1) to take the lead and held on with a time of 2:30.53 in the 800 meters to win the title.

Sophomore Madison Reynolds was second with a personal-best score of 4,453 points. Reynolds won the 800 meters in a big PR of 2:28.84. Fellow sophomore Anika Weisbrod placed fourth with a personal-best score of 4,359 points.

In the men’s decathlon, sophomore Pablo Romero won the title with a score of 6,599 after winning the pole vault with a mark of 4.42m (14-6) and the 1,500 meters in 4:38.15.

Freshman Gabriel Stainback placed second in his first decathlon with a score of 6,279 points, while junior Brad Kanney recorded a personal-best score of 5,186 points for third place.

At the Raleigh Relays, freshman Hocine Bouchrak won his men’s 5,000 meters heat in a time of 14:19.24 with a good finishing kick after being in fourth place with one lap remaining.

Freshman Famke Heinst placed 10th in her heat of the 5,000 meters in a time of 17:11.62. Sophomore Zoe Geis finished fourth in her heat of the 5,000 meters in a time of 17:42.79.

In the women’s 1,500 meters, freshman Carolina Baudinet placed fifth in her heat in 4:29.83.

Senior James House finished the men’s 100 meters in 10.93, while senior Makenzi Holmes-DiGiovine placed 19th in the women’s discus with a throw of 42.75m (140-3).

Up next, the Panthers host the 10th annual VertKlasse Meeting April 6-7 at Vert Stadium.
