College Baseball Final: #24 Shenandoah 13, Guilford 7

GREENSBORO, N.C. — Tristan Baker, Robert Marcelle and Matt Moon all had two hits as #24 Shenandoah University defeated Guilford College, 13-6, on Saturday.

With the win, the Hornets swept the two-game Old Dominion Athletic Conference series and improved to 14-6 and 5-3 in league play. The Quakers dropped its fifth straight game and moved to 10-13-1 and 1-7.

GC built a 1-0 lead after two innings and added three more runs in the third. Trevor Denton doubled to left centerfield to score Josh Shepherd who reached on a walk. Logan Shortt (2-3, 2 runs) followed with a single to the pitcher, which scored Denton. Sam Gerald (2-3) then doubled to right-center to bring home Shortt.

SU, however, plated seven runs in the fourth frame and never looked back. The inning was highlighted by a two-run home run to right field by Grant Thompson, and a double from Keegan Woolford, which scored three runners. Quaker pitchers, however, walked four hitters in the inning–who all scored. For the game, GC allowed 14 walks and three hit batters.

The Hornets chased Guilford starter Mitchell Stumpo (1-4) in the fourth. He tossed 3 2/3 innings, allowed seven runs against only four hits. Five Guilford pitchers took the mound in the game. Ryan Hill pitched a hitless ninth inning for the home club.

Reliever Johnathan Dance (2-0) earned the win for SU. He worked three scoreless innings, allowed two hits, and no runs.

Trailing 13-4, Guilford plated the game’s final two runs in the eighth.

Pinch-hitter Seth Ingle grounded out to score Cody Godley, who had a pinch-hit walk to lead off the frame. Dylan Tuttle later singled and came home after a throwing error.

The Quakers host ODAC rival Emory & Henry on Wednesday (4/4). First pitch is 3 p.m. at McBane Field.
