College Men’s Lacrosse Final – Bridgewater 14, Guilford 9

BRIDGEWATER, Va. – Eric Husselbaugh scored four goals and Blake Mann added three in Bridgewater College’s 14-9 Old Dominion Athletic Conference lacrosse win over visiting Guilford College Saturday.

The Eagles (8-3, 2-2 ODAC) scored five extra-man goals and closed the game on a 5-2 run to halt the Quakers’ (8-3, 2-1 ODAC) seven-match winning streak.

Both teams scored in bunches in what proved a game of runs. Mann had two goals and an assists in the first quarter as the Eagles built an early 4-1 lead. The Quakers rallied to tie the score at four thanks in part to two of Aswan Bland’s game-high four goals. Husselbaugh’s second score started a 5-0 Eagles’ spurt that spanned halftime and resulted in a 9-4 lead for the hosts early in the third quarter. Guilford responded with three straight scores before Husselbaugh closed the third quarter with his third goal and started the game-ending run.

Guilford’s comeback hopes were challenged by 10 fourth-quarter penalties, which led to four of the Eagles’ extra-man scores. The Quakers committed 17 infractions (11 versus defenders) in the game for a total of 14-and-a-half minutes. Bridgewater was whistled for eight penalties totaling five and a half minutes, two in the final frame.

Husselbaugh added two assists for a game-best six points. Mann had two helpers for a five-point showing, and Justin Calabrese (2 goals, 3 assists) also chipped in five points. Mason Gauntt won 14-of-22 draws and collected a game-high 10 ground balls. Goalie Kevin Metzger made 13 saves.

Bland’s five points paced the Quakers’ offense. Zach Berkowitz contributed two goals and two assists and Brennan Sweeney added one goal and one assist. Jake Dugal caused three turnovers and Parker Styles made 13 saves.
