HIGH POINT, N.C.—The No. 25 High Point University women’s lacrosse team opened Big South action in style with a 21-5 win over Radford Saturday afternoon (March 31) at Vert Stadium.

After Radford (3-7, 0-1 Big South) cut the Panther lead to 4-2 with 18:18 left in the first half, High Point (7-2, 1-0) scored the next 10 goals to break open the game. The Panthers led in shots, 41-14, and forced Radford into 29 turnovers to 12 for HPU.

“We were excited to get the win at home and it was a great way to start conference play,” HPU head coach Lyndsey Boswell said. “It was our Friends of Jaclyn game, so anytime we can play for a greater cause, we do that well and the girls had a lot of fun today (playing for the organization).

“We caused a lot of turnovers and created a lot of opportunities for our offense, which was our goal going into the game. Our defense stepped up in a really big way, we finished our shots and we played as a unit.”

The team wore shirts during warm-ups for the Friends of Jaclyn organization, which has a mission of improving the quality of life of children battling pediatric brain tumors and other childhood cancers. The Panthers have been connected to the foundation since the program started in 2009.

Senior Brooke Stevens scored five goals for the second-consecutive game to go along with three assists for eight points. Freshman Abby Hormes tallied four goals and her first two career assists, while sophomore Ashley Britton registered a season-high four goals with an assist. Senior Erica Perrotta added two goals and two assists.

Six other Panthers recorded a goal, including sophomore Brielle Prouty and freshman Sabrina Schrader, who tallied their first career goals.

The High Point defense was equally as potent as redshirt sophomore Meredith Chapman tied the school single-game record with six caused turnovers to go along with five ground balls. Chapman tied the record set by Jasmine Jordan against UC Davis on Feb. 29, 2012. Senior Olivia Nostrant also had five ground balls and recorded four caused turnovers.

In goal, sophomore Jill Rall played the first half and freshman Sarah Zeto played the second, with both saving three shots each.

Next up, the Panthers travel to Buies Creek to take on Campbell on Wednesday (April 4) at 4 p.m.
