Hick’s Complete Game Leads Pride To Doubleheader Split With #8 Monarchs

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. – The Greensboro College baseball team split a USAS South Athletic Conference doubleheader with the nationally ranked Monarchs of Methodist University Friday.
Methodist recorded a 7-6 walk off win a game one before Will Hicks went the distance on the mound for the Pride in the nightcap to tally a 7-4 win.
Greensboro took a 1-0 lead in the first inning when Blake Glass hit a double into the left center field gap before the Monarchs gained a one-run lead of their own with a two-run second.
The Pride then rebounded to regain the lead at 4-2 with a three-run third. Blake Glass got the scoring started with his second RBI single of the game before Brady Dignan plated Glass and Brayden King with a single to left field.
Methodist was able to pull back to within one run with a single run in the fourth before the two teams scored two runs each in the seventh, making the score 6-5 in favor of Greensboro. Lincoln Hewett tallied the Pride’s first RBI of the inning with a single to left center field before Blake Carroll laced a double to score King.
Greensboro was able to maintain their one run lead heading into the ninth, but the Monarchs tallied two runs in their final at bat to take the one-run victory.
Carroll and Dignan had three hits each in the game and combined for two RBI. Glass, Scotty McGuire, and Hunter Curtis finished with two hits. Piero Amador exited the game in line for the win after pitching the first six innings before giving way to Joseph Hoelle, who was credited with his first loss of the season.
Methodist took a one-run lead in the first inning before Greensboro drew even with a RBI single by Dignan in the second before striking for three runs in the third, taking a 4-1 lead.
Glass tallied his third RBI on the day with a single to center field, scoring Carroll, before McGuire and Curtis hit back-to-back RBI singles.
Greensboro maintained their three-run lead heading into the fifth when King extended the Pride advantage to five with a two-run single to left field.
Methodist was able to get one run back in the seventh before Greensboro responded right back to make the score 7-2 with a RBI single by Tim Osborne through the right side of the infield.
The score then remained the same until the ninth inning when the Monarchs struck for two runs before Hicks completed his stellar outing with a strikeout, securing the three-run victory.
Hicks threw 157 pitches on the day and located 94 of them for strikes. McGuire went 3-for-5 at the plate, while Curtis notched yet another multi hit game after finishing with two.
“This is such a resilient group of guys,” head coach Frank Maldonado said. “Another tough loss in game one and they responded with a win against a tough conference opponent in Methodist.”
