HPU Women’s Golf Finishes 13th at Charleston Invitational

MT. PLEASANT, S.C. — The High Point University women’s golf team finished 13th at the Charleston Invitational Tuesday (April 3) at the RiverTowne Country Club (Par 72 – 5,988 yards) in Mt. Pleasant, S.C.

HPU improved each round and finished with a third round score of 15-over 303 to conclude the tournament with a 917.

“This team certainly knows what they are capable of, they proved it at the end of the fall season,” HPU head coach Alexis Bennett said. “We played a significantly tougher schedule this spring, so I think our high expectations, paired with some real scoring inconsistencies at the bottom of the lineup and a nagging inability to finish off rounds, really hindered us from some quality finishes.

“I’m confident, though, that these tougher fields have prepared us well for the upcoming season finale. We have just a few missing pieces that we will work to impove this week before heading south in search of a program-best finish at the Big South Championships.”

Sophomore Tonrak Tasaso led the Panthers with four birdies on the way to a 1-under 71 and placed in a tie for 20th overall at 5-over. Senior Cayla Smith finished in a tie for 44th at 13-over after shooting a 2-over 74 in the final round.

Sophomore Samantha Vodry had a 4-over 76 in her final round to finish tied for 54th at 16-over. Freshman Caitie Gehlhausen finished the tournament at 251, while fellow freshman Anna Holmberg was a stroke behind at 252.

Up next, the Panthers will compete at the Big South Championships at the Patriot Golf Club in Ninety Six, S.C., on April 13-15.
