College Baseball Final: Guilford 12, Emory & Henry 5

GREENSBORO, N.C. — Mitchell Stumpo and Rocco Wilcox both had three hits as Guilford College defeated Emory & Henry, 12-5, in an Old Dominion Athletic Conference game on Wednesday afternoon.

The Quakers, who snapped a five-game losing streak, improved to 11-13-1 and 2-7 in ODAC play. The Wasps fell to 9-10 and 2-8.

The game was scoreless until the bottom of the fifth inning when GC plated three runs. Wilcox (3-3, 3 runs, 2 RBI) and Ryan Hill had RBI singles in the frame.

Logan Shortt (2-4, 2 runs) singled with one out in the sixth for Guilford. Wilcox then had another RBI single. GC led 4-0 heading to the seventh inning.

E&H then tallied three unearned runs off starter Zack Dinkins in the seventh. Yet Dinkins moved to 2-0 after securing the victory. He pitched 6 2/3 innings, allowed no earned runs, scattered four hits and fanned four batters.

The Quakers added four runs in the bottom of the seventh. The inning was highlighted by a triple, which scored two runners by Stumpo (3-5, triple, 3 RBI).

GC tacked on four more in the eighth inning. Brett Shapcott knocked a bases-clearing double as part of the scoring.

Josh Shepherd allowed three unearned runs in the ninth inning for the game’s final outs for the home team.

Guilford outhit E&H, 16-6. Trevor Denton and Dylan Tuttle both had two hits for GC. Dalton Horne went 1-4 with a double and three RBI for visitors. Alex Laws (0-1) started and took the loss for the Wasps. He surrendered three runs in five innings.

The Quakers return to action on Saturday (4/7) when Eastern Mennonite visits McBane Field. The ODAC doubleheader is scheduled to start at noon.
