Elon Track and Field Thrives at Phoenix Invitational

ELON, N.C. – Five event wins and several athletes setting new personal-bests helped the Elon University women’s track and field team showcase its talent to its home fans at the Phoenix Invitational on Saturday, April 14, at the Jerry and Jeanne Robertson Track and Field Complex.

FINAL RESULTS

Bre’anna Warren won the shot put for the second straight meet as the Greensboro, N.C., native threw a personal-record 48′ 6.75″ (14.80m). Bryanna Hames was the runner-up with her toss of 46′ 11″ (14.30m) while Skylar Barthelmes also was in the top-five with a throw of 42′ 10.25″ (13.06m).

Katie Arbogast followed with victory in the 400-meters as the Media, Pa., native set a personal-record for the third straight meet in the event with a time of 55.35. In the 800-meters, Gabriela Varisco de Oliveira snuck into the top-five on the program’s performance list with her win in the event at a time of 2:13.14. Elon swept the podium for the second time in the race in as many meets with Emily Smith as the runner-up at 2:15.38 and Natacha Savioz at 2:17.13.

Meagan Henderson claimed another event crown for the Phoenix with a time of 1:03.36 in the 400-meter hurdles – a new personal-record for the Duluth, Ga., native. Henderson concluded the meet by helping the Phoenix 4×400-meter relay team along with Arbogast, Varisco de Oliveira and Lauren Brzozowski win the event with a time of 3:49.41.

In the discus, Hames was the top finisher for the Phoenix as the Charlotte, N.C., native threw a season-best 163′ 4″ (49.79m) and was third overall. Warren was fourth with a throw of 163′ 0″ (49.68m).

Ellie Bennett set a new personal-record in the pole vault as the Mountaintop, Pa., native cleared the bar at 11′ 8″ (3.56m) and was second in the event. Teammate Nicole Karabas was fifth with her mark of 10′ 6.25″ (3.21m).

Melody Burke also had a personal-best mark in the long jump as the Concord, Va., native leaped into the program’s all-time top-five performance list with an 18′ 9″ (5.71m) for second-place. Emily Dixon was fourth with her mark of 17′ 11.75″ (5.48m), Alyssa Zee was fifth at 17′ 6.75″ (5.35m) and Elyse King was sixth at 17′ 4.25″ (5.29m). Burke would follow with a third-place standing in the triple jump with a mark of 37′ 6″ (11.43m) and a runner-up finish in the high jump with a 5′ 3.25″ (1.61m) cleared height.

Warren later threw another new personal-record, this time in the hammer throw with a toss of 167′ 5″ (51.04m), good for fourth overall. Hames was sixth with her mark of 151′ 4″ (46.12m) while Charlotte Bradsher was seventh with her personal-best of 148′ 1″ (45.13m). Barthelmes would later finish as the runner-up in the javelin with a throw of 134′ 5″ (40.98).

The Phoenix’s 4×100-meter relay team was second with a time of 48.39. Paige King also had a runner-up finish in the 1,500-meters with a time of 4:45.74. Brzozowski also garnered a second-place spot in the 100-meters with her time of 12.62. Dixon was second in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 15.17.
