Elon Men’s Basketball to Host UNC Inside Schar Center Next Season

ELON, N.C. – The countdown is on, and in only 207 days, the Elon University men’s basketball team opens its 2018-19 season versus the North Carolina Tar Heels inside Schar Center, Elon’s new state-of-the-art arena and convocation center. On Friday, Nov. 9, the Phoenix welcomes the Tar Heels to campus for the first time in 68 years. Schar Center has a seating capacity of 5,100 and is set to debut in 2018-19.

Season tickets for the 2018-19 season go on sale later this summer and are the only way to be guaranteed seats to watch Elon take on the University of North Carolina. Please fill out the Season Tickets Interest Form if you are interested in purchasing season tickets and the Elon Ticket Office will notify you regarding additional ticket information.

“We are excited to open Schar Center in a few short months,” said Director of Athletics Dave Blank. “This facility will have a tremendous impact on our campus and community and we are thrilled for everyone to experience all that Schar Center has to offer. We’re very appreciative of Coach Williams, Bubba Cunningham, and the UNC Tar Heels for agreeing to be part of Phoenix history as we play our opening men’s basketball game on November 9.”

Next season marks the first time the Elon men’s basketball program has hosted the Tar Heels since Dec. 2, 1950 inside Alumni Gym. This is the 23rd all-time meeting between Elon and UNC and the first since Dec. 29, 2011.

Schar Center will be the premier gathering space for the Elon community and surrounding region when it opens next year. The 5,100-seat arena will provide an elite venue for Phoenix basketball and volleyball games in addition to convocations, speakers and other major campus events. The facility is named for Dwight and Martha Schar, of Palm Beach, Fla. Among Elon’s most generous donors, the Schars have contributed $13 million to the university to provide lead funding for the convocation center and the expanded School of Communications facilities, which features Dwight C. Schar Hall as the centerpiece.
