Elon Phoenix Travels to Durham for the Duke Track & Field Invitational

ELON, N.C. – Following hosting its annual home meet, the Elon University women’s track and field team is headed to Durham, N.C., for the Duke Invitational this weekend on April 20-21. The meet will take place at the Morris Williams Track and Field Stadium with action beginning at 9 a.m. on Friday and at 10 a.m. on Saturday.

Elon Prelims
• This weekend’s meet will be one of the final times this season that the Phoenix will have the majority of its team in competition before the end of the regular season. About 29 athletes on the Elon’s women’s track and field team is scheduled to compete this weekend along with six members of the Phoenix men’s cross country team.
• Over 30 teams are expected to have at least one athlete or a relay team in competition this weekend at the Duke Invitational including several from the CAA. Among notable teams includes Appalachian State, Charlotte, Davidson, East Carolina, George Mason, North Carolina A&T, UNC Asheville, VMI and Winthrop. League opponents College of Charleston, UNCW and William & Mary will also contend this weekend at the meet along with ACC foes Virginia Tech and host Duke.
• On the CAA outdoor performance list, the Phoenix has two athletes currently leading their respective events in senior Bre’anna Warren (discus) and junior Coralea Geraniotis (5,000-meters).
• Overall, Elon has 16 athletes that are ranked in the league’s top-five on the performance list and two relay teams.
• Three Phoenix athletes remain in the top-48 of their respective events on the NCAA East Qualifying list. Bryanna Hames holds the highest ranking in the shot put at 21st overall while Geraniotis is 24th in the 5,000-meters. Warren is 28th overall in the discus while Hames also 42nd. Warren is also just outside the top-48 in the shot put at 53rd overall.
• Elon continues to be the highest ranked team from the CAA in the Southeast Region, sitting at 17th overall in the regional rankings. This meet will feature eight teams ranked in the top-20 of the Southeast Region including Virginia Tech (No. 3), Duke (No. 4), North Carolina A&T (No. 7), ECU (No. 12), Charlotte (No. 18), George Mason (No. 19) and William & Mary (No. 20).
• At the Phoenix Invitational, junior Ellie Bennett set a new personal-record with her cleared height of 11′ 8″ (3.56m) and finished as the runner-up. That mark is now the second-best performance in school history.
• Sophomore Melody Burke also set a new personal-best and broke in the Phoenix’s top-five in the outdoor long jump. The Concord, Va., native had a jump of 18′ 9″ (5.71m) and was second at the meet.

Last Time Out
Elon captured five event titles and saw several of its athletes set new personal-records at its annual home meet, the Phoenix Invitational last Friday, April 14. It was the fourth straight year that the program has hosted a meet and the fifth time overall since 2015.

Bre’anna Warren won the shot put for the second straight meet as the Greensboro, N.C., native threw a personal-record 48′ 6.75″ (14.80m). Bryanna Hames was the runner-up with her toss of 46′ 11″ (14.30m) while Skylar Barthelmes also was in the top-five with a throw of 42′ 10.25″ (13.06m).

Katie Arbogast followed with victory in the 400-meters as the Media, Pa., native set a personal-record for the third straight meet in the event with a time of 55.35. In the 800-meters, Gabriela Varisco de Oliveira snuck into the top-five on the program’s performance list with her win in the event at a time of 2:13.14. Elon swept the podium for the second time in the race in as many meets with Emily Smith as the runner-up at 2:15.38 and Natacha Savioz at 2:17.13.

Meagan Henderson claimed another event crown for the Phoenix with a time of 1:03.36 in the 400-meter hurdles – a new personal-record for the Duluth, Ga., native. Henderson concluded the meet by helping the Phoenix 4×400-meter relay team along with Arbogast, Varisco de Oliveira and Lauren Brzozowski win the event with a time of 3:49.41.

On Deck
Elon is scheduled to compete at the UVA Grand Prix in Charlottesville, Va., next weekend, April 28, for one final tune-up before the CAA Outdoor Championships.
