NCHSAA Announces 2018 Willie Bradshaw Memorial Endowed Scholarship Regional Recipients

CHAPEL HILL – The North Carolina High School Athletic Association has announced the winners of the Willie Bradshaw Memorial Endowed Scholarship for 2018. The Willie Bradshaw Endowed Scholarship provides $750 of scholarship support to an outstanding African American, American Indian/Alaska Native and/or Asian Pacific Islander American, or Hispanic American student-athlete participating on a sanctioned varsity team at an NCHSAA member school.

Out of the regional recipients, one male and one female student athlete will be selected as a state scholarship recipient and each will receive an additional $1,000 scholarship as state award winners. The state recipients will be announced at the Annual Meeting. The Annual Meeting is scheduled for Thursday, May 3, 2018 at the Dean E. Smith Center in Chapel Hill.

ABOUT WILLIE BRADSHAW
The Willie Bradshaw Memorial Endowed Scholarship is in honor of Durham-native, Willie Bradshaw, an NCHSAA Hall of Fame inductee in 1995 and National High School Hall of Fame inductee in 2010. Bradshaw was an outstanding athlete at Hillside High School, playing on the undefeated 1943 football team that went untied and unscored upon. He went on to North Carolina College (now NC Central University) and then on to pitch professionally for several Negro League teams. He became the first African-American city or county athletic director when he took over for the Durham City School system until his retirement in 1992.

Shandronique Jackson – John A. Holmes High School
Shandronique Jackson carries a 4.54 weighted GPA during her four-year career at Holmes High School. She has participated on the Volleyball and Softball teams during her time at Holmes and was named the team MVP for Volleyball during her senior season. Jackson plans to continue her educational career in the fall by attending NC State University where she plans to study Psychology.

Krystal Martinez – Hobbton High School
Krystal Martinez carries a 3.55 weighted GPA through her four years at Hobbton High School. Martinez ran on the Cross Country as well as Indoor and Outdoor Track teams. She served as Captain of the Cross Country and Outdoor Track teams for her senior season that saw each of those teams win conference championships. Throughout her career she has been active in HOSA, Key Club and Spanish Club. Martinez plans to attend William Peace University or Wake Tech in the fall to study Psychology.

Benjamin Anstead – Durham Riverside High School
Benjamin Anstead has pushed himself to a 4.60 weighted GPA during four years at Riverside High School in Durham. He has played basketball for all four years of his career, serving as Varsity team captain this season. Anstead was inducted into the National Honor Society his junior year and earned Durham Public School Academic Achievement Award. He plans to attend NC State to study Computer and Information Science in the fall.

Jordan Gary – Southeast Raleigh High School
Jordan Gary carries a 3.91 weighted GPA into final semester of her high school career at Southeast Raleigh High School. She has been a critical component of very successful cross country, indoor and outdoor track programs while also participating in volleyball. She helped her team to a team state championship in indoor and outdoor track and field in her sophomore season and was Regional and County Champion in the Triple Jump her junior year. Gary has been involved in Student Government, Fellowship of Christian Athletes, Beta Club and the Engineering Academy during her four years. She is undecided on her college of choice for the fall but plans to study Computer Engineering.

Nsaia Rogers – Whiteville High School
Nsaia Rogers has worked to a 3.66 unweighted GPA during her four-year career at Whiteville High School. She has been a member of the basketball and volleyball teams during her time with the school, earning All-Conference honors twice in volleyball and once in basketball. In her junior year she was named the Most Defensive Player on the volleyball team and the Most Versatile Award winner in basketball. She has participated in Marching Band, serving as Drum Major for her junior and senior years, and was inducted into the National Honor Society. She has been accepted to several in-state Universities and plans to begin her study of Kinesiology in the fall.

Giovanni Santibanez-Mendoza – Page High School
Giovanni Santibanez-Mendoza brings a 4.95 weighted GPA into his final semester at Page High School in Greensboro where he played soccer in each of his four years. Santibanez-Mendoza was the team captain for the varsity squad in his sophomore, junior and senior seasons, earning All-Conference and All-Region honors each of those three years. He is a member of the National Honor Society, National English Honor Society, Key Club and the National French Honor Society. He has been accepted at UNC-Wilmington and plans to study International Business in the fall.

Jose Romero – East Davidson High School
Jose Romero is a senior at East Davidson High School who has worked to a 3.76 weighted GPA in four years at the school. He has participated in track and field, soccer and football, serving as soccer team captain each of the last two seasons and has qualified for regionals in track during his sophomore and junior years. An aspiring artist and entrepreneur, Romero hopes to study Graphic Design at a college or university of his choosing in the fall.

Khali Maxfield-Davis – North Davidson High School
Khali Maxfield-Davis brings a 4.30 weighted GPA into her final semester at North Davidson High School where she participated in lacrosse and tennis. She was the number one seed on the tennis team, All-Conference award winner in three seasons, and won the 2A Midwest Regional to become the first State Qualifier in women’s tennis in school history. She is Vice President of the National Honors Society, and active in the Junior Civitans Club as well as the “Brutal Black” Spirit Club. She has not decided where she will continue her education in the fall but plans to study Accounting.

Bryanna Foster – A.L. Brown High School
Bryanna Foster is a senior at A.L. Brown High School in Kannapolis that has participated in women’s basketball and track and field during her four years while compiling a 3.69 weighted GPA. She was honored as the varsity basketball team’s Most Valuable Defensive Player during her junior year. She has been an Honor Roll Student all four years and been invited to join National BETA Club as well as inducted in the National Technical Honor Society. She has been active with her church, regularly visiting nursing homes and assisting the Boys Club Coach in demonstrating skills. She hopes to continue her education by majoring in Film Studies in the fall.

Siamani Olomua – Concord High School
Siamani Olomua is a senior at Concord High School who has earned a 3.80 unweighted GPA entering his final semester at Concord. Olomua earned three varsity letters in football during his time in school. He has been active as a South Sea Dancers Polynesian entertainer throughout high school, earned a position in the NC House of Representatives Page Program during his junior year, and served as an RHA Health Services Volunteer for people with special needs. He is a member of the Spanish, History and English Honor Societies at the school. He plans to attend NC State University and study history in the fall.

Elena Propst – Maiden High School
Elena Propst carries a 4.70 weighted GPA into her final semester of her senior year at Maiden High School. Propst has played soccer and basketball during her four years at Maiden, earning All-Conference honors during three seasons in soccer while being named the Conference’s Offensive Player of the Year during her junior season and being named to the All-Region team. She is a member of the Junior BETA Club, HOSA Club, Fellowship of Christian Athletes and attended North Carolina Girls State. She plans to attend Carson-Newman University in the fall majoring in Pre-Medicine.
