College Women’s Lacrosse Final – Virginia Wesleyan 17, Guilford 16

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Tori Manahan’s man-up goal with seven seconds remaining in regulation lifted visiting Virginia Wesleyan University to a 17-16 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) women’s lacrosse win at Guilford College Saturday.

Manahan’s fifth goal of the day spoiled a valiant Quakers’ comeback that saw the hosts tie the score at 16-16 on Audrey Helfenbein’s career- and game-high sixth tally with 30 seconds remaining.

Guilford (6-10, 1-7 ODAC) raced to a 5-1 lead behind two Helfenbein goals, but the Marlins (8-7, 2-6 ODAC) recovered to tie the score at 6-6 on the last of Ashley Campos’ three goals. Guilford netted two of the next three tallies to take an 8-7 halftime lead.

Sparked by two Manahan goals, the Marlins opened the second half on a 6-1 run that gave the guests a 13-9 margin with 16:06 remaining. The teams traded tallies for the next 12 minutes before Helfenbein scored twice around a Cat Thresher goal to knot the score at 16-16.

Megan Schallock had two goals, two assists, and a game-high nine draw controls. Campos added eight draws, which helped Virginia Wesleyan to a decisive 23-11 edge in the critical statistic of possession. Renee Burt added three goals and Avery Frangelli scored twice. Mike Hairston made 12 saves in her first collegiate start in goal.

Helfenbein added two assists to her game-high six goals for a personal-best eight points, the most by a Quaker this season. Nia Gill scored three Guilford goals and teammates Carter MacLeod, Grace Moore, and Abigail Horchar each added two scores. MacLeod, a senior in her final college game, also delivered two assists, four ground balls, five draw controls and four caused turnovers, all team highs. Fellow senior Sarah Sedaghat made 13 saves in goal.
