High Point to Play in 2018 Bimini Jam

HIGH POINT, N.C.—The High Point University men’s basketball team will participate in the 2018 Bimini Jam Nov. 16-19 at Gateway Christian Academy in Bimini, Bahamas.

The Panthers will compete in the inaugural Bimini Jam along with Air Force, South Dakota and UMBC. The tournament has a round robin format with the champion determined by overall record.

High Point’s first matchup will be against South Dakota on Friday, Nov. 16 at 6 p.m., following the game between Air Force and UMBC, set for 3:30 p.m. Winners from the opening round will return to action Saturday, Nov. 17 at 8:30 p.m. Losers will face off the following day, Sunday, Nov. 18 at 3:30 p.m. All four teams will conclude the tournament Monday, Nov. 19 with games scheduled for 6 and 8:30 p.m.

Located just 50 miles off Florida’s coast, Bimini is the closest Bahamian island to the United States, boasting miles of pristine beaches. South Dakota finished 2017-18 with a 26-9 record and an 11-3 record in the Summit League. The Coyotes fell to South Dakota State in the Summit League tournament final.

Air Force concluded the 2017-18 campaign with a 12-19 record while going 6-12 in the Mountain West Conference.

UMBC became the first No. 16 seed to defeat a No. 1 seed in the men’s NCAA Tournament when it upset No. 1 Virginia, 74-54, in March. The Retrievers, who won the America East tournament title, went 25-11 overall in 2017-18.

The 2018-19 Panthers will be in its first season under new head coach Tubby Smith. HPU went 14-16 (9-9 Big South) in 2017-18.
