Game Report – Boys Basetketball – Southwest Guilford vs RJ Reynolds

The Cowboys continued on the road as they begin the new season. After a convincing victory over Southeast earlier in the week, the Cowboys traveled to RJ Reynolds to take on the Demons in the Bobby Martin Classic. The Demons were coming fresh off a victory of their own over a scrappy Salem Baptist squad. The frigid air and freezing rain outside helped set the mood for the game. It was just as sloppy and ugly inside the gym as it was outside. The Demons got on the board first and a single free throw by the Cowboys cut it to 2-1. A defensive stop and a made 3 pointer got the Cowboys to 4-2 by the 6:35 mark. The Demons responded well and tied it up at 4 apiece. A three point play on the ensuing possession put Southwest up for good for the afternoon at 7-4 at the 4:55 point. That was the start of a quick 10-2 spurt which culminated with Southwest up 14-6 by the 3:28 point. The frame went back and forth for the remainder until the Demons ended it with a bucket to close it under double figures at 24-15.

The second frame started with the Cowboys seeming to grab the momentum with a monster dunk to make it 30-17. The Demons would not allow the Cowboys to run away however, as they scrapped and fought to keep the game honest. A three pointer by Southwest put the close on the opening half at 46-36.

The second half was the same story as the Cowboys seemed to pull away, and the Demons would lasso them back within reason. A few times the Cowboys got the margin to 18, but the Demons would whittle it back down. The frame closed with the Cowboys up 69-56.

The final stanza was even sloppier as the turkey seemed to really effect both sides as the wrong kind of turnovers dominated play. Again, the Cowboys got the margin back out, and yet again a strong surge in the final minutes made the final tally 85-69. RJ Reynolds was led by Mysta Goodloe with 23 points.

Once again a balanced attack by the Cowboys propelled them. Keyshaun Langley had (23, 6 Rebs, 4 Stls, 4 Asts), Kobe Langley had (12, 4 Rebs, 2 Stls, 12 Asts, 2 Blks), and Joel Pettiford has (12, 11 Rebs).
