FERRUM, Va. – The Greensboro College women’s basketball team defeated the Panthers of Ferrum College in a very high tempo game Monday, 81-73.

Ferrum held on to a 7-4 lead just three minutes into the opening period before Greensboro rushed out to a 16-9 lead with a 12-2 run that lasted just over five minutes.

Lauren Whitley got the Pride run started with a jumper from the left elbow before Katie Lewis connected from three-point range for the first time.

As the run continued, Lewis tallied another three-pointer before capping it off with a second-chance layup.

Ferrum then pulled to within five just seconds later but Nichelle Jeffries converted an old fashion three-point play to extend the Greensboro lead to 19-11, before going into the second period with 22-16 advantage.

In the second, Ferrum traded baskets with Greensboro over the first seven minutes before the Pride was able to take their largest lead of the half at 37-25, following yet another Lewis three-pointer.

Over the remainder of the half, the Panthers were able to outscore Greensboro 8-4 but the Pride was able to take a 41-33 advantage into the break.

After the intermission, Ferrum began to catch their stride on offense and cut the Greensboro advantage down to two before Ashley Free hit a three-pointer from the left wing to push the lead back out to five at 44-39.

Following the Free three-pointer, Greensboro began to find their stride once again as they went on to extend their lead back out to 58-45 with 58 seconds showing on the third period clock before Ferrum connected on two long three-pointers over the final 34 seconds to cut the Pride advantage to seven heading into the final 10 minutes.

Despite allowing the Panthers to cut into the lead, the Pride quickly raced back out to a double-digit lead over the first three minutes of the fourth period behind the play of Brianna Best, Lauren Jenkins, and Whitley.

However, Ferrum was able to battle back once again to pull within seven with two minutes remaining before Greensboro held on late to secure the eight-point victory.

Sabria Joseph finished the game with a game-high 22 points, while Lewis (16), A’Liyah Woods (15), and Jenkins (10) also finished in double figures. In addition to her 10 points, Jenkins pulled down a team-leading nine rebounds.

Greensboro forced 36 turnovers on the day, resulting in 42 points, and out rebounded the Panthers 44-41.

The Pride women will return to action at 4 p.m. Saturday when they return to USA South Athletic Conference play when the Battling Bishops of North Carolina Wesleyan College come to Hanes Gymnasium.
