High Point WBB Outlasts Longwood, 65-54

FARMVILLE, Va. – The High Point University women’s basketball team defeated Longwood, 65-54, Tuesday (Feb. 5) in Farmville, Va.

High Point (15-6, 9-2) out-rebounded Longwood (2-18, 1-9) 38-37 for the game. HPU grabbed 15 steals and forced Longwood into 25 turnovers for the game. The Panthers scored 21 points off turnovers. The Panthers shot 39.7 percent (25-63) from the field, while the Lancers made 39.2 percent (20-51) overall.

Senior Emma Bockrath led all scorers with 15 points. She also posted eight rebounds, two assists and five steals for Purple & White. Junior Camryn Brown led HPU with five assists and logged 12 points, two rebounds and three steals. Junior Miya Bull grabbed eight rebounds and scored seven points for the Panthers.

“I told our kids at halftime that I didn’t like our second quarter at all,” HPU head coach DeUnna Hendrix said. “I felt like we came out with the right focus and the right mentality and in the second quarter we were just okay. Again, it’s just we have to mature. It’s February we can’t be a team that is that inconsistent based on the half. I wish we had a better second half. I thought our first half was decent, but we need to have a better second half.”

The Lancers closed the third quarter on an 8-1 run to cut HPU’s lead to 50-37 going into the fourth quarter. Longwood made a three to open the fourth quarter and cut the Panthers’ lead to ten at 50-40, but High Point quickly responded with a Bockrath jumper and two free throws from senior Lindsey Edwards to push the lead back to 14.

The Panthers held a 54-40 lead when Longwood went on a 7-3 run to cut the lead to nine at 56-47 with 5:44 remaining in the game. After an Edwards layup, the Lancers cut the lead to eight with a three. High Point then went on a 5-1 run to take a 63-52 lead with 1:24 remaining. HPU hit two free throws and Longwood made a layup to set the final score.

After Longwood opened the game with a free throw, the Panthers went on a 19-0 run. HPU took a 22-8 lead after the first quarter. High Point brought a 38-21 lead into halftime.

The Panthers forced 13 Longwood turnovers and scored 14 points off the change of possession in the first half. The Purple & White shot 45.5 percent (15-33) from the field in the first half, while holding the Lancers to 32.0 percent (8-25) from the field. The Panthers out-scored Longwood 18-8 in the paint in the first half.

Edwards had 10 points, six rebounds and one steal for the Panthers. Every Panther who played in the game scored at least two points.

High Point out-scored Longwood 28-22 in the paint and 21-8 off turnovers. The teams were even at nine in second chance points, while Longwood took a 24-19 edge in bench points.

Up next, the Panthers will host the Highlanders of Radford on Saturday, Feb. 9. Tip-off is set for 2 p.m. in the Millis Center.
