No. 15 Duke WLAX Tops Elon in Rhodes Stadium

ELON, N.C. – Elon University women’s lacrosse dropped an 18-5 decision Sunday, March 3, at the hands of No. 15 Duke inside Rhodes Stadium to open the month of March.

Out of the gate, Duke (5-1, 1-0 ACC) went up 1-0 on a goal 40 seconds in by Charlotte North. The Phoenix (2-4, 0-0 CAA) answered nicely, though, with Bella Feldman notching her eighth goal of the season to knot things up at 1-1 just two minutes later.

Less than 30 seconds after Elon’s goal, though, Olivia Rubin scored for the Blue Devils to start a 10-0 run to take the Duke lead to 11-1 with 13:48 to go before halftime. Feldman netted her second of the day with 9:15 left in the first to halt the running clock, but the Blue Devils added six more goals down the stretch in the opening frame to take a 17-2 lead to halftime.

Out of the break, Mae McGlynn scored twice in the opening six minutes to put her season goal total at an even 20. She also assisted on a Cami Lynch tally that put Elon on a 3-0 run in the opening 13 minutes of the frame, but the Blue Devils held Elon off the board the rest of the day on the way to the victory.

Feldman and McGlynn led Elon’s offensive attack with two goals apiece. McGlynn and Shannon Horan also both picked up a team-best three ground balls with Horan and Quinn Daly grabbing two draw controls apiece. Carleigh Goldstein and Leah Zadjura both led the team with two caused turnovers.

North and Olivia Jenner led Duke with four goals and two assists apiece for six points with Jenner also grabbing six draw controls. Olivia Rubin also scored three times with an assist for four points. Veronica Hineman picked up a team-best five ground balls and three caused turnovers while scoring twice.

Elon will be back in action on Thursday, March 7, when it welcomes the nationally-ranked Florida Gators at 5 p.m. on Phoenix All-Access. This week, Florida checked in at No. 11 in the IWLCA poll and No. 13 in the Inside Lacrosse poll.
