No. 10 HPU MLAX Panthers Fall at Jacksonville

• Sophomore Asher Nolting led the Panthers with five points (two goals, three assists).

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The High Point University men’s lacrosse team fell at Jacksonville, 10-12, on Saturday (March 23).

High Point (7-2, 1-1) grabbed 34 ground balls and finished with a .846 (22-26) clear percentage, while Jacksonville (3-6, 2-0) had 29 ground balls and a .793 (23-29) clear percentage. The Panthers went 15-25 at the face-off ‘X’, put 17 shots on goal and caused 12 turnovers.

“We will fix all our deficiencies and get back to work on Monday,” HPU head coach Jon Torpey said.

Sophomore Asher Nolting led HPU with five points (two goals, three assists), while redshirt senior Chris Young and junior Ben Baker added two goals. Junior Ricky Koehler dished out a career-high two assists. Junior Davis Sampere led the Panthers at the face-off ‘X’ with a 12-21 record. Senior Tim Troutner made 10 saves for the Panthers. Sophomore Clayton Krol caused a career and team-high four turnovers for High Point.

Jacksonville scored early then junior Dalton Sulver tied the game for HPU with an assist from Nolting with 6:29 left in the first. Baker gave High Point the lead with 1:54 left off an assist from sophomore Taylor Acra. After the Dolphins took a 3-2 lead to start the second quarter, sophomore Colin Clothier tied the game at 3-3 off an assist from senior Griff Caligiuri with 10:55 left in the first half. After a Jacksonville goal, the Purple & White responded with goals from Acra and Young to take a 6-5 lead into the half.

The Panthers grabbed 21 ground balls and caused 10 turnovers, while the Dolphins had 14 ground balls and nine caused turnovers in the first half. Sampere was 8-13 at the face-off ‘X’ in the first half.

The Panthers were out-scored 1-5 by Jacksonville in the third quarter and were unable to recover. Nolting scored two goals and Young and Baker added one goal each for High Point in the second half.

Up next, the Panthers will host Furman at Vert Stadium on Saturday, March 30. The opening face-off is set for 12 p.m.
