KANNAPOLIS, N.C. – The High Point University men’s golf team finished the first and second rounds of the Irish Creek Intercollegiate with a score of 4-over 572 on Saturday, April 6, at the Club at Irish Creek. The Panthers finished the day tied for 10th as a team.

As a team, HPU shot even-par 284 in the first round and 4-over 288 in the second round. UNCG leads all teams at 11-under 557, while Florida State is second at 10-under 557.

“Very solid play from the guys in a strong field today,” HPU head coach Brady Gregor. “Anytime you get an under par round from your five man, it goes a long way. I was happy Drew [Weary] went out and got that done. We had three players all shoot under par at least one round today so it shows we can do it in our lineup top to bottom.”

Junior Alec Weary led the Panthers with a score of 3-under 139. He is currently tied for fifth. The junior opened the tournament with a career-low 3-under 68 in the first round followed by an even-par 71 in the second round. He logged six birdies on the day and eagled the par-5 fifth hole in the first round.

“Alec [Weary] played a very solid 36 holes today and has a chance to go out and medal with another par or better round tomorrow,” Gregor said. “I still don’t think we have had our best round yet and we look to go out and post a low score tomorrow and see what happens.”

Junior Brendan MacDougall finished the day tied for 19th with a score of even-par 142. He posted a 3-under 68 in the first round followed by a 3-over 74 in the second. MacDougall logged eight birdies on the day with five coming in the first round.

Freshman Brandon Einstein was 3-over 145 to tie for 49th after two rounds. He logged a first round score of 1-over 72 and a second round tally of 2-over 73. Einstein recorded four birdies on the day.
