Elon Baseball: Tigers Take Game Two to Pull Even in the Series

TOWSON, Md. – Elon University baseball put up a late fight but fell 7-3 Saturday afternoon, April 6 at John B. Schuerholz Park as Towson pulled even in the CAA series.

George Kirby (5-1) was charged with the loss after getting tagged for five runs on 10 hits. The junior struck out five across 4.0 complete innings. Brandon Justice pitched an inning, Kyle Greenler went 1.2 innings, and Dean McCarthy tossed 1.1.

Joe Satterfield batted 3-for-5, doubled, and drove in a pair of runs to lead the Phoenix (17-14, 6-2 CAA) offensively. Anthony Galason added a 2-for-5 effort and scored a run, and Adam Spurlin finished 1-for-4 for Elon’s other hit.

How It Happened: The Tigers (4-24, 1-4) brought in the first run of the game after a two-out double to center and a single to right. The black and gold added two more runson four hits in the fourth. With two on, Elon was able to get the lead runner out at third, but a single to left scored the runner from second. After an infield fly to second, a hit to right made it a 3-0 advantage.

Towson kept on the pressure with a three-spot in the fifth. The hosts executed a pair of suicide squeezes and reached on an error to pull away 6-0. The Tigers picked up their last tally in the seventh thanks to a leadoff double, a sacrifice bunt, and a single to second. Elon finally started clicking in the eighth as Matt Oldham and Satterfield both reached on Towson fielding errors. With runners on the corners, ball four to Ty Adcock was in the dirt, allowing Oldham to break up the shutout.

The Phoenix continued to battle in the ninth. Jack Roberts was hit by a pitch and moved to third on a Spurlin double to left. Satterfield then singled to second as both runners scored on the play. Towson looked like it might bail Elon out as Cam Devanneyreached on an error by the third baseman, but the Tigers recorded the strikeout to bring the potential tally to an end.

Notes: With a hit to the gap in right in the top of the third, Galason extended his on-base streak to 29 games. Satterfield has also reached safely in 26 games…The game marked the 13th multi-hit game and fourth multi-RBI game for Satterfield…With the win, Towson snaps a 12-game losing streak. It was also the first win against Elon since an 11-10 final on April 14, 2017….Tyler Cranston’s older brother John earned the save in what was just the second save opportunity for the Tigers this season.
