Thursday night game report from Post 53 Red Wings on Twitter:
GREENSBORO, NC — The Red Wings came out on Thursday night seeking redemption against the HiToms. Ten days ago, Post 87 beat Greensboro 3-2 on a 2-out, bases-loaded walk-off straight steal of home. That was not the case tonight.

Opener Jack Ratliff was not perfect in his one inning of work, but he got out of it cleanly. Ratliff walked two but also struck out two. He did not allow a hit or a run and left two runners stranded.

In its half of the inning, Post 53 came out to give its pitching staff some run support. The Red Wings pushed one run across on an RBI single by Cam Edmonds, scoring Adam Weber who had been hit by a pitch and stole two bases. Another RBI single in the second by Josh Nichols scored Cody Donnell, who led the inning off with a double.

For a few innings, the score remained 2-0. Bowen Young pitched well in relief; the long-reliever took over in the second inning and finished the game. Young went six innings and allowed four hits and three walks but no runs while striking out eight.

The fifth and sixth innings all but sealed the game for Post 53. Alden Kolessar led the fifth off with his first home run of the season to make the score 3-0. In the sixth, Matt Stanley walked and advanced to third on a botched pickoff attempt. Stanley was brought in on a sacrifice fly by Nichols to push the lead to 4-0. With two outs, Kolessar reached second on an error and moved to third on a wild pitch. Adam Weber lined a ball back up the middle for a single, scoring Kolessar.

Among the large reasons for tonight’s victory were several smaller ones, including baserunning. The Red Wings stole a season-high eight bases (Edmonds-3, Weber-2, Dilday-2, Kolessar-1) and had several great reads on balls in the dirt. Another reason is that they did not miss at the plate; Post 53 recorded four walks to three strikeouts. A third reason is that the team did not make an error in the field and had opportunities to make several great plays.

Bowen Young recorded his first win of the year. The Red Wings are now 3-7 in the division and 5-10 overall. They look to continue their recent hot streak at home on Friday against Randolph County. The last time they faced off in Asheboro, Post 45 won 7-2.
