DAVIDSON COUNTY, N.C. — A former North Davidson High School teacher and coach has been charged with indecent liberties with a student, according to a press release.

Detectives with the Davidson County Sheriff’s Office received information late Monday night about an inappropriate relationship between the former teacher/coach and a current juvenile female student at the school.

Detectives began an investigation into the alleged relationship and identified James Brandon Mullis, 36 of High Point, as the former teacher/coach involved.

Mullis was a teacher and was the head varsity boys’ basketball coach for the past two years at the high school (August 2017 to May 2019). He resigned from North Davidson in April to accept the same position at Southwest Guilford High School, according to the Winston-Salem Journal.

Detectives conducted a search warrant on Mullis’ residence in High Point on Tuesday. They located a photograph linking Mullis and a 16-year-old female student as engaging in a relationship.

Mullis was arrested at his residence and charged with one count of incident(Indecent) liberties with a student and one count of third-degree exploitation of a minor.

Mullis was held in the Davidson County Detention Center under a $50,000 secure bond and is scheduled to appear in Lexington District Court on July 29.

This is still an active, ongoing investigation and there is potential for additional charges.

Anyone with information regarding this case or any other case of this nature is urged to contact the Davidson County Sheriff’s Office.

  1. from Joe Sirera at the News and Record’s HSXtra section:
Michael Hettenbach, Southwest’s principal, said that, “Per human resources, the teacher’s contract(contract of Brandon Mullis) has expired and he will not be renewed for the coming school year.”

“It’s deeply disappointing that I learned last night that a teacher and coach who recently joined our school staff was charged by law enforcement in another county with two crimes involving an inappropriate relationship with a minor unrelated to our school,” Hettenbach said. “Hopefully, that right there tells you how shocked I was.”

  2. Things are starting to take on a different twist now after this statement issued this afternoon, by the Davidson County Schools:

Davidson County Schools released a statement Wednesday afternoon, saying Mullis wasn’t employed with the school system at the time of the alleged incident.

“We only learned of this alleged incident and arrest in the last 24 hours,” said a statement released by Davidson County Schools. “However, to our knowledge, and based on what law enforcement has shared with us, this unfortunate incident did not occur on Davidson County Schools property or while Mr. Mullis was employed with Davidson County Schools.”

This next piece/part of information is what has many people shaking their heads and it come our way, by way of the WS Journal, and http://www.journalnow.com:

There is a discrepancy between the dates in the arrest warrant and the language in the narrative used in the arrest warrant.

The dates of the offense listed in the warrant — June 26 through July 2 — reflect a time period after his tenure had ended at North Davidson. The narrative alleges he was a teacher and coach at North Davidson when the alleged incident occurred. The sheriff’s office hasn’t returned calls seeking clarification.

  3. Split hairs about the time frame. At the end of the day it doesn’t matter. He had an inappropriate relationship with a 16 year old
Girl. He shouldn’t work in a school ever again. He was a fraud from the jump anyways. Hopefully SWG will hire the best man for the job as they should have in the first place and he was already on staff. Will Price who served as an assistant during the recent run SW had and was one of the best high school players to come through high point going back to his days at Andrews in the early 2000’s.
