from the Guilford County schools on Bill Chambers and some of the same notes, that we had:

Bill Chambers is a Greensboro native and a 1972 graduate of Grimsley High School. In high school he lettered 3 years in basketball, and in his last season, was named All-State as well as prep All-American Top 100 seniors in the country.

In the fall of 1972 Chambers enrolled at UNC Chapel Hill on an athletic grant-in-aid and played for the legendary Coach Dean Smith. He was named captain his senior year and earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology in 1976.

After college he went to play professional basketball in Belgium. There he played 3 years for the Pepinster Basketball Club and one season for the Ensival Club. After a four year stint, he returned to Greensboro in 1980. In 1982 he earned his teaching certification in French and Social Studies from UNC Greensboro.

In 1982 Chambers became the boys’ varsity basketball coach at Dudley High School. He led the Panthers to several successful seasons earning conference coach-of-the-year honors in 1984 and 1986 as well as a Little Four Championship in 1985 before joining the college ranks.

In 1986 Chambers was named head men’s basketball coach at North Carolina Wesleyan College in Rocky Mount. During his 9 year stay at Wesleyan, the team won several Dixie Conference Championships and, in 1987, made it to the Final Eight in the nation for NCAA Division III colleges. He was named conference coach-of-the-year in 1989, 1990, and 1995. In October of 2003, Bill Chambers was inducted into the North Carolina Wesleyan Athletic Hall of Fame as the basketball coach with the most career wins.

He finished his college career in 2000 after five successful seasons coaching the men’s team at Greensboro College.

In the fall of 2000, Coach Chambers returned to the classroom teaching French at Kernodle Middle School. There he coached the boys’ basketball team and compiled a record of 116-43 (.729 winning percentage) over 12 years. His team won the conference championship six times.

In 2012 he returned to the high school level as the head coach at Northern Guilford High School. During his seven seasons the Nighthawks have amassed a 124-77 overall record, and a 87-31 record in the Mid-State 3-A Conference.

The team advanced to the second round of the state playoffs his first four seasons and, in his fifth, made it to the Final Four in the state. During the 2017-18 season the Nighthawks won the conference with a 12-2 record as well as winning the conference tournament. That year their final record was 23-6 and they made it to the Sweet 16 in the state playoffs.

  4. I always found this to an interesting note on Bill Chambers dad, also Bill Chambers…I guess we could call our Greensboro Bill Chambers, Billy…

But here is that note on his dad:
On February 14 of his senior year in college, at William and Mary, Chambers set an NCAA single game rebound record of 51 against the University of Virginia. It is a record that still stands to this day.

51 rebounds in one game, that is Wilt Chamberlain-esque for Mr. Chambers….
