Elon Men’s Golf Set to Defend Title at Phoenix Invitational

BURLINGTON, N.C. – The Elon University men’s golf team is looking to defend its title as the team hosts the Fifth Annual Phoenix Invitational this Monday and Tuesday, Oct. 14-15 at Alamance Country Club.

Teams will play 36 holes of continuous play on Monday with an 8:45 a.m. shotgun start. The Invitational then concludes with the final 18 holes on Tuesday as teams tee off from holes one and 10 beginning at 8 a.m.

“We’re excited to be hosting the Fifth Annual Elon Phoenix Invitational this week,” said head coach Don Hill. “We’re very fortunate to have a great field and a wonderful course on which to compete. It should be an exciting two days at Alamance.”

The field consists of 16 teams and 99 total players. In addition to Elon, other schools competing in the tournament include Appalachian State, Drexel, Gardner-Webb, George Mason, George Washington, La Salle, Longwood, Morehead State, Navy, Ohio, Presbyterian, Radford, Temple, Towson, and Wofford. UNCG and East Carolina will also have individuals competing.

ABOUT THE PHOENIX
The Phoenix is coming off a seventh-place finish at the Wolfpack Intercollegiate, hosted by NC State at Lonnie Poole Golf Course on Oct. 5-6. Elon carded a two-over par 290 through the final 18 holes of the Intercollegiate and turned in a three-round score of 865 (+1). Graham Hutchinson and William Frodigh both finished tied for 15th to lead the maroon and gold. After turning in a career-best round with a four-under 68 on Saturday, Frodigh shot a two-over 74 in round three. Hutchinson collected a par-72 as the pair ended up with a two-under 214. Max Ferrari carded a one-over 73 on the day and finished tied for 19th with an even 216. Quade Lukes was next for the Phoenix, recording his best round of the weekend with a one-under 71. The effort led the Chapel Hill, N.C. native to a tie for 41st with a 221 (+5). Cristian Del Vecchio wrapped up his two days with a plus-three 75 and an overall tally of 227, and Bronson Myers rounded out the team with a 233. The freshman from Columbia, S.C. also played his best round on Sunday with a two-over 74.

LAST TIME AT THE PHOENIX INVITATIONAL
The Phoenix finished first out of 16 teams in last year’s tournament. Entering the final day of the Invitational with an eight-under 560, Elon combined for a 283 to hold off Ohio with an 843 (-9). The Bobcats took the runner-up trophy with a four-under 848, and Temple rounded out the top three at 849. It marked the second year in a row that the team won its home tournament. Elon posted a one-under par final round to hold on for a four-stroke win during the 2017 tournament on Oct. 16-17. Elon’s 11 under-par 841 marked the fourth lowest 54-hole total in the program’s Division I history since 1999.
