Guilford College Men’s Basketball Final: #19 Guilford 62, Methodist 60

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Senior Kyler Gregory posted game-highs of 19 points and 12 rebounds as Guilford College defeated visiting Methodist University, 62-60, on Tuesday evening,

The Quakers, ranked 19th in the current D3hoops.com poll, improved to 6-1 on the season. The Monarchs dropped to 3-2 following the non-conference loss.

Gregory shot 7-of-8 from the field and made 5-of-7 free throws for the home team. Sophomore Liam Ward added 15 points and junior Jaylen Gore tallied eight points and dished four assists for Guilford.

The game, which was tied 29-29 at halftime, featured 11 lead changes and was tied nine times. The Quakers matched its biggest lead of eight points after Ward made a three-point basket with 5:53 remaining in regulation to push the score to 57-49.

MU, however, then outscored GC 11-3 and tied the contest after Garren Dearman drained a three-pointer with 33 seconds left. Quaker freshman Jorden Davis made two free throws for the game’s final two points. With 1.7 seconds left, Gregory then missed two free throws to ice the game and gave the visitors a final chance. Yet Dearman’s three-pointer with time expiring was off the mark and Guilford held on for the victory.

Dearman led Methodist with 14 points. Dante Burden and Calvin Manley each contributed 12 points for the Monarchs.

Guilford shot 50-percent (23-46) for the game while the visitors were 25-57 (44-percent). GC won the battle of the boards, 39-26. Methodist committed eight turnovers and forced 16 Guilford miscues.

The Quakers return to Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) action on Saturday at Eastern Mennonite University.
