Winston-Salem Prep trailed early, then enforced its will on East Forsyth with a withering defensive stretch to defeat the Eagles 72-46 in the opening round of the Frank Spencer Holiday Classic at RJ Reynolds High School Thursday night. The third-seeded Phoenix advanced to the semifinal round of the tournament’s upper bracket to play Atkins, an upset winner over second-seeded RJR which will play East in the consolation game at 1p on Friday at RJR.

The winless Eagles led throughout the first quarter, leading 17-12 with 90 seconds left in the opening period. But Prep turned up the pressure & East went cold, going 13 minutes without a FG until a basket finally fell with Eagles trailing 48-23 with 4:25 left in the third quarter. Prep stretched its lead to as many as 34 points before clearing the bench.

Prep’s TJ Mills led all scorers with 22 points and Stephen Minor added 19, including four three-pointers in the Phoenix’s balanced scoring effort. Senior Brion Jones led East with 17.
