GREENSBORO, N.C. -The Greensboro College Pride men’s basketball team dropped a hard fought battle to the Cougars of Averett University Wednesday 71-65.

Averett started the game on a 6-0 run over the first three minutes before Greensboro put together a 14-4 run over the next six minutes to take a 14-10 lead. Keyford Langley started the run with a three-pointer from the top of the key before Keyvon Meertins hit a pair of free-throws to cap it off.

The Pride was then able to hold on to their lead until Averett went on top 22-21 with 3:47 on the clock. During that time, the two teams traded the lead back and forth eight times before Averett went into the break with a 31-30 lead.

However, Greensboro used an 11-4 run over the first five minutes of the second half to take a six-point lead, but Averett battled back once again to tie the game at 42 with just less than 12 minutes remaining. As the half continued, the two teams traded the lead four more times before Averett used a 10-3 run to establish a 62-57 lead with 1:31 on the clock.

Despite facing the five-point deficit, Greensboro continued to battle but could not overcome the deficit and fell by the six-point margin.

Michael Phifer finished with a team-leading 16 points and Langley chipped in 16 points to go along with four assists.

The Pride men will return to action Saturday when they travel to Methodist University. For more information on Greensboro College men’s basketball, continue to follow www.greensborocollegesports.com.
