Final Score from this afternoon’s completed boys basketball game at Dudley High School’s Chester Bradley Gymnasium:
Grismsley 75, Northwest Guilford 60
Grimsley(16-6/7-1)…Northwest Guilford(20-4/7-1)

End of 1st Q:Grimsley 18, NWG 8…Halftime:Grimsley 35, NWG 24…End of 3rd Q:Grimsley 55, NWG 38…Final:Grimsley 75, NWG 60…

Grimsley Scoring: Daniel Cooper 25 points, Ronan Martinek-Jenne 19 points, Ahmil Flowers 15 points, Tyler Albright 4 points, Jayden Watlington 3 points, Ross Kreagar 3 points, Luke Jenkins 2 points, Travis Shaw 1 point…
Northwest Scoring:Christian Hampton 20 points, Robbie Boulton 10 points, Jackson Hartzell 9 points, Brandon Thomas 8 points, Shaq Marsh 5 points, Dean Reiber 4 points, Josh Humphrey 4 points…

Usually, but not always, the team with the most made 3’s will win the game, but not in this case, as NWG had 9 made three’s with 3 each from Christian Hampton and Scott Hartzell, I mean Jackson Hartzell, Scott was his dad, who played for UNCG back in the day…Robbie Boulton with two made three’s for NWG and Shaq Marsh with one…

Grimsley got their three-point game face on, with 5 made three’s from Ronan Martinek-Jenne and the other came on the opening shot of the game, back on Friday night, and that three was from senior captain, Ross Kreagar…

The three’s from Grimsley proved to be deadly, as Martinek-Jenne was killing it mainly from the right side of the court and he was also hitting a few of his treys from the left side of the basketball court today, at Dudley HS…If Skip McCall, the legendary Dudley High School PA announcer would have still been around with us today, he might have been calling Martinek-Jenne “The Rifleman” today…We thought we heard Grimsley PA man and long-time Whirlie sports leader, Mr. Courts, calling Martinek-Jenne the “Lethal Weapon” more than once this afternoon….

We were calling Grimsley’s Daniel Cooper, Michael Cooper, during today’s game at Dudley, and Daniel certainly shared a likeness with the former LA Laker Michael Cooper on this Saturday, as Daniel Cooper was putting in every shot he got on the inside blocks today, and he could have been Michael Cooper, and he could have passed for James Worthy, the way Daniel was cashing in on those two’s on the low blocks…He had twelve(12) two’s/two-point field goals, and most of his makes were coming off of the right block down low, but there were times when Daniel Cooper was also taking advantage of his open spaces on the left-side low blocks too…Cooper was a killer today, Cooper a Viking killer…

We spoke about the three Whirlie Powers in our opening headline and it was Cooper, Martinek-Jenne and Flowers, the Three Whirlie Powers…Ahmil Flowers…

Flowers showed much poise today and he laid out much of the glue, that kept his Whirlies coming through, in the clutch…Flowers cashed in some key free throws, and made the most of his two-point tries, but still with Ahmil, it was his will to win for the Whirlies, and the fact that he had been in these tight spots before/previously and he knew where to go on the court, and what to do….Experience, going all the way back to his freshman year as a Grimsley Whirlie, that Flowers’ experience, the fact that he had been there and done this before, that was a key to what Ahmil Flowers had to offer this Grimsley team, in this key Metro 4-A Conference clash…Flowers had the knack to take advantage of the rack, and he was able to bring that veteran knack to the court and again, it sure paid off for the Grimsley Whirlies….

Another powerful piece of the puzzle today for Grimsley, might have been the most important puzzle piece of all…The Whirlies leader and their coach Darren Corbett…Coach Corbett has that even keel and he keeps his kids composed and focused, and that allowed his men to bring it home today, and to bring it home on their Home Court, away-from-home, at Dudley High School…Coach Corbett said he was really/very pleased that the Dudley HS gym, the Chester Bradley Gym, was selected as the replacement site, for today’s Grimsley-NWG game completion…

Coach Corbett said the Dudley gym was the closest building around in size and structure comparison to Grimsley’s very own Bob Sawyer Gym…Coach Corbett told us in the post-game interview that the Dudley gym reminded him of Grimsley’s Sawyer Gym, and when his team got to the Dudley gym early today and they started warming up for the completion game, he had a very good feeling about the floor and the overall layout of the Dudley Chester Bradley Gymnasium…”Very similar to our place”, said Coach Corbett…”I really liked the way our guys were shooting the ball in warmups and in particular, I liked the way Ronan Martinek-Jenne was shooting in warmups today”…”When Martinek-Jenne is on, I think we are going to be on”…..

Always good to be able to speak with Grimsley coach Darren Corbett following a Whirlie Win, and it always brings back memories of his dad, “Big Don” Corbett, when the former N.C. A&T Hall of Fame basketball coach used to attend his son Darren’s games, while Coach Darren Corbett was coaching his tail off, at the Whirlies’ Bob Sawyer Gym….

The Dudley Panthers were very gracious hosts today at the Chester Bradley Gymnasium, and we take time to offer up thanks to Dudley High School principal Rodney Wilds and to the Dudley Panthers’ Athletic Director Art Wade, for helping to make this game happen today…Also thanks to Coach Holland, who was there working courtside to make sure the sound, the power and the clock were in proper working order, and functioning at their top levels today….

It was a great day to play a half of high school basketball, and I can’t think of a better way to finish a ball game than the way we did it, at Dudley today….I think our old leaders and friends, Bob Jamieson and Skip McCall, would have been proud of the way things went on this Saturday, at James B. Dudley High School…

Good to see Brian Hall, from WFMY TV 2 Sports and Eddie Hughes, from Spectrum Sports, there getting some first class video and audio prior to today’s basketball game action at Dudley HS….
(Also a quick shout out to Grimsley Whirlie AD Ethan Albright and Grimsley principal Ged O’Donnell, for weathering the storm and keeping their fan base informed about all of the changes that transpired over the past two days…I’m sure the Whirlie Faithful are in the end, pleased with all of the proceedings.)

**********And yes, a final time, the big thing you all came over to read about tonight…..A final time, the Final Score from today’s game:Grimsley 75, Northwest Guilford 60.**********

  1. One other thing on Ahmil Flowers, from the Grimsley-Northwest Guilford game, was the job Ahmil did in drawing the charges while on defense..He did an outstanding job of staying in there, getting his feet and then taking the charge…Definitely affected the game of Dean Reiber, the NWG big man…Dean was out of the game, for long periods of time, due to his foul trouble, and he eventually fouled out, and that was due in part to the work turned in by Ahmil Flowers on defense for Grimsley…Taking those charges led to major changes in how NWG was able to attack and run their offense….

And that leads me this thought and it first came my way back on Friday and the same thought crossed my mind again, on Saturday….

Who is named the Player of the Year in the Metro 4-A Conference for boys basketball???

Friday night I was thinking maybe that Christian Hampton and Dean Reiber from Northwest Guilford could be sharing that award, and now maybe we have to also put Ahmil Flowers, the senior from Grimsley, in the running for that award….

Not sure who gets it now??? Hampton, Reiber, or Flowers….It is not decided by the public pollsters, the Metro 4-A boys basketball coaches will be the deciding factors on this particular vote…

Makes for some good discussion though….

Hampton, Reiber or Flowers and the voters will be Coach Fancourt from Page, Coach Atkinson from Ragsdale, Coach Battle from High Point Central, Coach Corbett from Grimsley, and Coach Reavis from Northwest Guilford….

They usually do the voting on All-Conference and Players of the Year, the Saturday morning after the regular season ends…That would have put the coaches meeting yesterday/Saturday morning, with the Grimsley-Northwest Guilford boys game still waiting to be finished on yesterday/Saturday afternoon…

That is what really gets your thinking…

We will find out I’m sure, soon enough….

But, until then, it sure leaves us wondering….

For the Metro Girls, I would say Reagan Kargo, from Northwest Guilford as Player of the Year…

Then on All-Conference I would go with Nyah Stallings, Diamond Monroe, and Mariah Frazier from Ragsdale, Thalia Carter and Megan Harkey from Northwest Guilford, Reagan Maynard from Page, Destonie Tisdale from Grimsley, and at least one player possibly from High Point Central…The NWG and Ragsdale players on First Team and the others on Second Team….

Just a few thoughts on a Sunday afternoon….

  2. Mr. Hampton the baddest cat in this area hands down no question and on both ends of the floor. He can score, defends on the ball, help defend, block and steals.
I like flowers too. The other guy a Lil too soft finesse for my taste.
Hampton best hooper here and best athlete in all sports. Only other cat an even comes close in athleticism is D boykin.
