Baseball Shuts Out Berry Behind Strader’s Complete Game Performance
MOUNT BERRY, Ga. – Parker Strader((Northeast Guilford High School) pitched a complete game shutout for the Greensboro College baseball team Saturday as they defeated the Vikings of Berry College 6-0.
Greensboro scored their first run of the contest in the fifth inning off of a Hunter Curtis single before Braxton Rupp extended the lead to 3-0 with a two-run home run in the sixth inning.
With the Pride holding on to the three-run lead, Greensboro stuck for the game’s final three runs in the seventh inning. Scotty McGuire had a RBI single to center field before Rupp and Kendal Tucker both hit RBI sacrifice flies into left field.
In the bottom of the ninth, the Vikings got a runner on second base, but a great heads up defensive play by Michael Garvey Jr. neutralized the threat before Chance Bryant secured the final out on a softball ground ball to first base.
Bryant and Jacob Rodriguez both finished with two hits on the evening, while five other players had one hit apiece. Strader finished the game with five strikeouts and only allowed four hits.

Men’s Basketball Falls 98-84 On Road Against Methodist
FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. – The Greensboro College men’s basketball team fell to the Monarchs of Methodist University Saturday 98-84.
Just over midway through the first period, Methodist held a 28-17 lead, but the Pride went on a 9-2 run to pull back to within four. Eric Peaks Jr., who finished with 19 points on the day, led the way during the run with five points, while Kevon Meertins and Keyford Langley combined for four points.
Over the next five minutes, Greensboro was able to hang tight before Methodist took a 10-point lead into the break after going on a 6-0 run to close out the half.
Following halftime, the Pride came out on fire and quickly pulled back to within three after posting a 9-2 run. Peaks Jr. scored seven of the nine points, while Matthew Brown added the other two. Despite having the momentum on their side, Greensboro found themselves trailing 51-43 just minutes later, but Meertins drained a pair of three-pointers on back-to-back possessions to cut the deficit to just two.
However, Greensboro was unable to get any closer and fell by the 14-point margin.
Meertins finished the game with a team-leading 21 points, while Michael Phifer finished with 18 points and seven rebounds.

Men’s Lacrosse Drops Season Opener To Virginia Wesleyan
GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Greensboro College men’s lacrosse team dropped their season opener to the Marlins of Virginia Wesleyan Saturday 13-5.
Greensboro struck for the game’s first goal just over three minutes into the first half. With the Pride playing a man down, following an unfortunate penalty, goalkeeper Christopher Stallings made long feed down the field to Michael Meley who was able to tuck the ball into the bottom corner of the goal.
The Pride was able to hold on to their lead before the Marlins struck for the final three goals of the period to take a 3-1 lead into the second.
Early in the second, Davis Miller picked up a ground ball and beat the Marlins keeper to pull Greensboro back to within one, but Virginia Wesleyan went on to extend their lead out to 6-2 with three straight goals over the next four minutes. With time winding down in the half, Michael Halladay connected with Austin Abourjilie for Greensboro’s third goal of the afternoon, which pulled the Pride to within three at the break.
However, the Pride was not able to get any closer for the remainder of the game as the Marlins outscored them 6-2 over the final 30 minutes of action.
Abourjilie finished the day with two goals and one assist. Stallings finished the game 26 saves but was credited with the loss.

Hai Sui Picks Up Tournament Win As Pride Wrestlers Post Strong Showing At Southeast Wrestling Conference Tournament
MONTGOMERY, Ala. – Hai Siu won the 141-lb class at the 2020 Southeast Wrestling Conference Championship Saturday at Huntingdon College.
The Pride finished third as a team but Paul Bauberger, Conan Wilson, Tyron Dudley, and Brandon Williams turned in second-place finishes in their respective classes. In addition, Joey Ferigne turned in a third-place finish in the 133-lb class.
Following the strong showing at the championship, Greensboro will return to practice and finish gearing up for the 2020 NCAA Southeast Regional, which begins on Feb. 28.

Women’s Basketball Drops Heartbreaker In Regular Season Finale
RALEIGH, N.C. – The Greensboro College women’s basketball team dropped a heartbreaker to the Pacers of William Peace University Saturday 70-69.
Greensboro held an 8-6 lead midway through the opening period, but William Peace closed out the final 4:13 on an 11-4 run to take a five-point lead into the second. However, Greensboro quickly opened the first 2:15 of the second period on an 8-2 run to hold a 20-19 lead with 7:16 to play in the half.
During that time, Greensboro would lead by as many as four, but William Peace was able to take a 33-27 lead into the half, following a 14-4 run.
After intermission, William Peace took their largest lead of the game midway through the fourth period, but the Pride went on an 11-3 run to tie the game at 66, following a layup by Katie Lewis. Following the Lewis layup, William Peace regained a two-point edge with a pair of free-throws before Destiny Timberlake hit a three-pointer with less than a minute remaining to put the Pride on top 69-68.
However, William Peace scored with seven seconds remaining in the game to jump in front for the final time, despite a last second attempt by the Pride.
Joseph finished with a double double of 16 points and 11 rebounds, while Lewis and Diajah Hickson both had 11 points.
With the loss, the Pride earned the No.4-East seed in the USA South Tournament and will face No.5-East seeded Mary Baldwin University in the first round at home Wednesday.
