Elon Women’s Tennis Phoenix Rallies In Singles To Defeat Davidson, 5-2, On Sunday

ELON, N.C. – Elon University women’s tennis rallied in singles play to defeat Davidson, 5-2, on Sunday, Feb. 16.

Following today’s matches, the Phoenix moves to 7-4 overall this season and has now won six of its last seven matches.

Alex Koniaev led the way for Elon, outlasting Elizabeth Truluck in a three-set battle, 5-7, 6-3, 6-2. Koniaev’s singles win secured Elon’s fifth and final point of the match. In doubles, Koniaev combined with Olivia Archer to defeat Samantha Armas and Emma Heiderscheit 6-3 to wrap up Elon’s lone doubles win on the day.

­­Freshman Shauna Galvin also played a key role in the Phoenix’s victory today, taking down Franny Shea in straight sets 6-0, 6-2. Victoria Saldh’s three set win over Armas 4-6, 7-5, 6-4, sealed the match for Elon.

Also in singles, Archer and Kiana Rizzolo picked up the Phoenix’s other two victories, defeating Heidercheit and Josia Schaffer respectively. Archer earned the win 6-4, 7(3)-6, while Rizzolo grabbed a 1-6, 7-5, 6-4 victory.

“The team competed very well today against a strong Davidson team and bounce back strong after a tough doubles point. Shauna and Olivia were very focused and helped us generate a lot of great momentum in singles. Followed by Kiana, Victoria and Alex’s relentless determination to win. This match was a great team effort.”
