Page Pirates are now in the Conference Tournament Championship Game to held on Friday night, at either Northwest Guilford High School…..(7:30pm) vs. Northwest Guilford HS…
Page the #3 seed upsets #2 Grimsley tonight and the first time they played over at Page, back in January, the score was Grimsley 64, Page 42…Then over at Grimsley High School, last Tuesday night, Grimsley defeated Page, 39-38, and then tonight, at UNCG, Grimsley gets the upper hand and the Pirates sail away with their 7-point victory..
End of 1st Q:Page 14, Grimsley 13…Halftime:Page 23, Grimsley 21…End of 3rd Q:Page 46, Grimsley 36…Final:Page 64, Grimsley 57…
Page had built up a 14-point sizeable lead in the 4th and final period, and then Grimsley, behind the driving to the basket and free throw shooting of senior guard Ahmil Flowers, Grimsley came back and had cut the Pirates’ lead to just four points, 59-55, with just 58 seconds left in the contest…Then Ahmil Flowers fouled out, Travis Shaw had to leave the game with what looked like a cramp, and Ronan Martinek-Jenne got his finger jammed, and Grimsley was doomed…
You have to give Page tons of credit for this win, they received key free throw shooting from Zion Conner down the stretch and for the game, Page got the game of his lifetime and just maybe his varsity career-game, from Mack Pearsall…Pearsall played his guts out and he gave Page nearly 12-15 minutes of game time and it was his time tonight, as Pearsall scored 10 points from the Pirates’ bench and he gave Coach Evan Fancourt everything the coach could have wanted, during Pearsall’s time on that UNCG court this evening…He was not only doing it on defense, he banked in a three-point shot from nearly half court to help give Page their halftime lead…
Page also got key minutes and valuable time from their bench from Jonathan Campbell…When Campbell gets going, he can nail the three-point shot going away…And he was doing that tonight, with three 3’s, and got his other three points at the foul line, hitting 1-2-3 free throws, when he was fouled while taking a three-pointer…
For the Pirates that scored, almost everyone hit double-digits….Jaden Ellis was his usual steady self with 15 points, and Ellis seems to have a much better total-game, when other teammates are getting in on the act, and that allows Ellis to the other things he does best, like setting up the offense/running the offense, getting his teammates in position to score and playing ball-stripping defense, where he knocks the ball away from the opposing offense with his quick hands…
Ellis got much needed help from Campbell who pumped in his tweleve points, Jason Sellars, Zion Conner and Mack Pearsall had 10 points each and Tyren Farrow added 7 points, for the Page Pirates….All of those six Pirates that scored played well, but again, we were most impressed with the efforts of Mac Pearsall and Jonathan Campbell tonight there in the Fleming Gymnasium, at UNCG…..Whit Edwards and Josh Scovens also played for Page tonight, but he did not score…
Grimsley Scoring:Ahmil Flowers led the way for the Whirlies with 21 points, and of those 21 points, 11 of his points came from the free throw line, and late in the game, Flowers was willing his way to the charity stripe with his drives to the basket…Also for the Whirlies, Daniel Cooper had 11 points, Travis Shaw had 8 points, and he had a sequence in the first half, where he made at least four superb passes to his Whirlie teammates for easy buckets, and those were some of those passes we need to be talking more about when we mention the young phenom that is Travis Shaw, because those passes are “off-the-hook”, and Travis Shaw’s passes are so smooth, that he looks better making the passes, than he does taking his hook shot….He has those passes down pat, and again he makes them look so smooth, and his “no-look” pass, is one to die for…
More from Grimsley you had 6 points a-piece for Luke Jenkins and Jayden Watlington, there was 4 points for Tyler Albright and 3 points for Ronan Martinek-Jenne…
That is our wrap on Grimsley vs. Page and Page vs. Grimsley tonight from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro/UNCG and Joe Sirera will more later on, including many key details, at www.hsxtra.com….
